Deputy Gardens Manager - Heritage Site - Central London

A prestigious heritage site in central London is seeking a highly skilled Deputy Gardens Manager to join its team. As a key member of the horticultural team, you will assist the Head of Grounds and Gardens in the smooth operation of the site's gardens and grounds.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in the management of the gardens and grounds, including the maintenance of horticultural machinery and equipment.
  2. Supervise and monitor the work of Grounds and Gardens staff, ensuring that tasks are completed to a high standard.
  3. Conduct risk assessments and health and safety checks, and implement measures to mitigate any risks identified.
  4. Use a range of horticultural machinery, including ride-on mowers, tractors, and pedestrian machines, to maintain the gardens and grounds.
  5. Apply and record the use of chemicals, including pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides, in accordance with COSHH regulations.
  6. Assist in the management of the glasshouse, including propagation and production.
  7. Manage the floristry requirements of the site.
  8. Monitor and manage stock levels of PPE and sundry horticultural items.
  9. Deputise for the Head of Grounds and Gardens at heritage meetings and other events as required.

Requirements:

  1. A solid understanding of horticultural practices and principles.
  2. Experience working in a heritage landscape or similar environment.
  3. Basic plant knowledge and a passion for horticulture.
  4. Relevant experience in horticultural and turf culture practices.
  5. A horticultural or landscape management qualification, or equivalent.
  6. A safe use of ride-on mower certificate, compact tractor certificate, and safe use of chemical spraying certificate (PA1/6A).
  7. Good presentation and communication skills.
  8. Good supervisory skills.

Working Conditions:

The successful candidate will work 41 hours per week, Monday to Friday, in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The role requires a high level of physical fitness and the ability to work at heights.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary for this role is £34,000 per annum, plus excellent benefits, including enhanced holidays, an enhanced pension scheme, and opportunities for development and training.
