Deputy Grounds and Gardens Manager

A prestigious heritage site in central London is seeking a highly skilled Deputy Grounds and Gardens Manager to join its team. This esteemed institution is renowned for its beautiful gardens and attracts a large number of visitors and residents. The successful candidate will be responsible for deputising for the Head of Grounds and Gardens and assisting in the smooth running of the gardens, as well as carrying out skilled and unskilled horticultural tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Assist the Head of Grounds and Gardens in setting and monitoring individual team member objectives.
  2. Carry out day-to-day supervision and monitor timekeeping of Grounds and Gardens staff.
  3. Assist in the maintenance of horticultural machinery, both in-house and outsourced, and record maintenance work as required by health and safety regulations.
  4. Conduct formalised risk assessments, health and safety checks, machinery checks, vibration and noise monitoring, and formal fuel checks.
  5. Operate a range of horticultural machinery, including ride-on mowers, tractors, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and pedestrian machines.
  6. Use, apply, and record chemicals, including pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides, and maintain and update COSHH records.
  7. Perform tasks such as mowing, pruning, planting, weeding, and leaf clearing as required.
  8. Liaise with external agencies, contractors, and stakeholders, including the Royal Horticultural Society.
  9. Assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the glasshouse, including propagation and production.
  10. Manage floristry requirements.
  11. Monitor and manage stock levels of PPE and sundry horticultural items.
  12. Deputise for the Head of Grounds and Gardens at heritage meetings and other meetings as required.
  13. Assist in the management of apprentice and volunteer programs.

Requirements:

  1. A solid understanding of garden machinery and its maintenance.
  2. Experience working in a heritage landscape or similar environment.
  3. Basic plant knowledge.
  4. Relevant experience in horticultural and turf culture practices.
  5. A horticultural or landscape management qualification at Level II or equivalent.
  6. A safe use of ride-on mower certificate, compact tractor certificate, safe use of chemical spraying certificate (PA1/6A).
  7. Good presentation and communication skills.
  8. Good supervisory skills.
  9. Horticultural passion.

Salary and Benefits:

  1. £34,000 + excellent benefits, including enhanced holidays, enhanced pension scheme, development opportunities, free and discounted events, etc.
  2. Full-time and permanent position.
  3. Working 41 hours per week, including paid breaks, Monday to Friday.
  4. Central London location.
