Deputy Grounds and Gardens Manager

A prestigious heritage site in central London is seeking a highly skilled Deputy Grounds and Gardens Manager to join its team. This esteemed institution is renowned for its beautiful gardens and attracts a large number of visitors and residents. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Head of Grounds and Gardens in the smooth operation of the gardens and carrying out a range of skilled and unskilled horticultural tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist the Head of Grounds and Gardens in setting and monitoring individual team member objectives.
  • Carry out day-to-day supervision and monitor timekeeping of Grounds and Gardens staff.
  • Assist in the maintenance of horticultural machinery, both in-house and outsourced, and record maintenance work as required by health and safety regulations.
  • Undertake formalised risk assessments, health and safety checks, machinery checks, vibration and noise monitoring, and formal fuel checks.
  • Operate a range of horticultural machinery, including ride-on mowers, tractors, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, and pedestrian machines.
  • Use, apply, and record chemicals, including pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides, and maintain and update COSHH records.
  • Carry out tasks such as mowing, pruning, planting, weeding, and leaf clearing as required.
  • Liaise with external agencies, contractors, and stakeholders, including the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • Assist in managing the day-to-day operations of the glasshouse, including propagation and production.
  • Manage floristry requirements.
  • Monitor and manage stock levels of PPE and sundry horticultural items.
  • Deputise for the Head of Grounds and Gardens at heritage meetings and other meetings as required.
  • Assist in the management of apprentice and volunteer programs.
Requirements:
  • A solid understanding of garden machinery and its maintenance.
  • Experience working in a heritage landscape or similar environment.
  • Basic plant knowledge.
  • Relevant experience in horticultural and turf culture practices.
  • A horticultural or landscape management qualification at Level II or equivalent.
  • A safe use of ride-on mower certificate, compact tractor certificate, safe use of chemical spraying certificate (PA1/6A).
  • Good presentation and communication skills.
  • Good supervisory skills.
  • A passion for horticulture.
Working Conditions:

The successful candidate will work 41 hours per week, including paid breaks, Monday to Friday. The role is based in central London and offers a competitive salary, excellent benefits, and opportunities for development.
