Job Overview

Become an integral part of the Ministry of Defence (MOD) in a crucial position focused on protecting the security, independence, and interests of the United Kingdom, both at home and abroad. Work in close collaboration with international partners to uphold our nation's safety. This role is situated within the Directorate of Security and Resilience (DSR) at the MOD Head Office, which is tasked with developing, executing, and overseeing protective security policies, advising senior officials, and establishing standards for resilience and security throughout the Department.

This position is structured for 37 hours each week.

Role Responsibilities

As a vital member of the Vetting team within DSR, you will take on a C2 role that centers on personnel security clearance (Vetting) casework. Your responsibilities will include managing high-stakes, intricate, and sensitive cases involving MOD Civilian and Defence Contractors. We are looking for an outstanding individual who excels in teamwork and brings a proactive and enthusiastic attitude. This position requires excellent multitasking abilities and flexibility. You will enjoy significant autonomy in decision-making while working within a supportive team environment.

The position allows for hybrid work arrangements, combining office and remote work for enhanced flexibility, with a requirement to be in the office 60% of the time. Candidate Profile

What will the successful candidate be doing?

  • Evaluate personnel security clearance applications and make informed, risk-based decisions.
  • Collaborate with local risk owners to address identified risks and ensure comprehensive assessments.
  • Respond promptly to Vetting suspensions, issuing written notifications to relevant parties in cases of immediate security concerns.
  • Provide accurate and timely advice and assessments for denial and withdrawal cases to the DSR Vetting Casework Manager and others.
  • Manage appeal cases through the internal appeals process and the Security Vetting Appeals Panel.
  • Guide key stakeholders (e.g., Human Resources, Security community) on postings, appointments, and access to sensitive information.
  • Contribute to the development of Personnel Security Policy and assist with Secretariat tasks, including responding to Treat Official and Ministerial Correspondence.

Essential Qualities:

  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and organizational skills due to regular interactions at senior levels.
  • Exhibit initiative by proactively identifying emerging issues and developing solutions.
  • Showcase excellent writing abilities.
  • Proficiency in IT tools, including Excel and Outlook.

Preferred Experience:

Familiarity with personnel security casework is advantageous.

Benefits

In addition to a salary of £35,290, the Ministry of Defence contributes £9,528 towards your membership in the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Additional benefits include:

Some roles may allow for a combination of office and home-based working, subject to business needs. All office-based employees are expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in the office, with provisions for necessary workplace adjustments. The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD and are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.

Please note that the Department is conducting a review of all pay-related allowances, which may affect the allowances associated with this position.
