About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Biomedical Support Worker to join our dynamic team within the Wessex Genomics Laboratory Service (WGLS) at University Hospital Southampton. This newly formed integrated genomics testing service combines expertise from both the Wessex Regional Genetics Laboratory and Molecular Pathology at UHS, playing a vital role in the Central & South Genomic Laboratory Hub network.

Your Responsibilities

  • Receive and process patient samples for DNA and RNA extraction, ensuring accurate booking and handling.
  • Perform DNA and RNA extractions, meticulously adhering to established protocols and conducting quality control checks on extracted materials.
  • Coordinate the transfer of samples to other Trusts for specialized testing, maintaining clear communication and documentation throughout the process.
  • Receive and upload results from collaborating Trusts, ensuring timely and accurate data integration.
  • Contribute to the smooth operation of the laboratory by performing general lab duties and assisting with maintenance tasks.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • GCSE level A-C (or equivalent) in at least two subjects from Maths, English, and Science.
  • ECDL or demonstrable proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Prior experience with hospital IT systems.
  • NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent qualification in a relevant field.
