Nottingham, Nottingham, United Kingdom Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trusts Full time

Position Overview

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a dedicated Trust Grade doctor to become a part of our esteemed Stroke Medicine team at the CT3+ level. We have two positions available, one for a 12-month engagement and the other for a 6-month tenure.

This role is particularly suited for individuals aspiring to advance their career in Medicine, especially those who have recently achieved their full MRCP and are looking to enhance their skill set and professional profile or gain additional core experience prior to pursuing a training number. Candidates will engage in various stroke-related areas, particularly focusing on hyper-acute stroke admissions, while providing guidance and support to junior medical staff and the Emergency Department team.

You will receive the same training opportunities as other medical professionals and will be supported in developing a comprehensive CV suitable for future applications to registrar or consultant positions. Our Stroke department is passionate about education and training, featuring an active teaching schedule and opportunities to engage in audit activities.

Additionally, there will be chances to apply for a CESR training position in Stroke Medicine.

Key Responsibilities

We encourage you to review the detailed job description and person specification.

The primary responsibilities of this role include supporting the stroke consultant rota with new stroke admissions, participating in TIA clinics, conducting ward rounds, and attending outpatient clinics.

About Our Organization

Our Stroke service operates across multiple sites, encompassing a hyper-acute ward, an acute ward, and a rehabilitation ward, along with a daily Fast Track TIA clinic. Last year, our stroke unit managed 1800 admissions, in addition to reviewing 600 patients at the TIA clinic.

Job Responsibilities

This position is classified as a service role and does not possess educational approval; however, successful candidates will be provided with tailored training and educational opportunities to meet their individual needs. Where feasible, candidates are encouraged to attend educational sessions.

Post holders are expected to stay current with medical knowledge and practices, attend departmental clinical meetings, and participate in audits and in-service training for other healthcare professionals. Arrangements will be made to ensure that individuals can attend necessary meetings and training sessions. Successful candidates will be required to maintain an educational portfolio and will receive designated Educational and Clinical Supervision.

Post holders can anticipate:

  • Enhancing their postgraduate clinical experience (or equivalent)
  • Developing expertise in the identification and management of acute stroke (including thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy, and assessment for decompressive hemicraniectomy) and its complications
  • Gaining experience in identifying and managing a variety of other medical conditions (stroke mimics), including making informed decisions regarding the necessity for admission, developing strategies that may provide alternatives to admission, and identifying safe and appropriate early discharge options
  • Further developing skills in history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation, and rational prescribing
