We welcome applications from individuals interested in part-time or flexible/annualized contracts.
Commitment to Excellence
Our organization is devoted to ongoing service enhancement across all facets of our operations for the benefit of our patients. We encourage applications from candidates with interests in education, research, patient safety, quality improvement, and management.
As one of the busiest acute medical services in the region, we manage an average of 110 patient admissions daily. If you thrive in a dynamic environment, we invite you to consider joining our team.
While we seek candidates who are committed primarily to Acute Medicine, we also welcome those who wish to maintain clinical interests in other medical specialties.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will engage in various aspects of our service, including:
- Acute Medicine Receiving Area (22 trollies and recliners)
- Assessment Unit (currently 51 beds)
- Level 1 (12 monitored beds for high-acuity admissions)
- Acute Medicine Rapid Assessment (dedicated service for triaging referrals)
- Telephone Triage
Consultants are present on-site seven days a week and are supported by an exceptional nursing team and approximately 45 junior doctors. We are adopting alternative workforce models, including a growing team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners, Physician Associates, and prescribing pharmacists.
Further Information
Our Acute Medicine department is located on a prominent medical campus. We are ambitiously restructuring, expanding, and modernizing our services, providing opportunities for new team members to influence the future direction of our operations. Our vision is to establish a senior-led, front-door service that collaborates closely with colleagues in Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, medical specialties, and Primary Care.
We have a strong national and international reputation for delivering high-quality patient care, research, education, and innovation, supported by robust partnerships with local universities. This collaboration facilitates excellent training and educational opportunities for students and positions us as a major research institution.
Employee Benefits
We offer a comprehensive range of employee benefits, including:
- Access to a Staff Wellbeing program, including a 24-hour advice and emotional support service, financial advice, physiotherapy, and support networks

Job Responsibilities
We offer a uniquely flexible annualized job pattern, allowing individuals to tailor their working hours to suit their personal circumstances. A shift bank system facilitates easy shift swaps and time off for additional shifts worked beyond the agreed job plan.
We have expanded our bed capacity and are planning further development of our Same Day Emergency Care services. Our commitment is to provide the highest standard of care for our patients, with a team dedicated to continuous service improvement and opportunities for all to contribute.
We seek a colleague whose primary focus is Acute Medicine but who is also open to continuing clinical interests or liaison roles with other specialties, such as:
- Stroke

- Geriatric Medicine
- Acute Oncology
- Haematology
- Endocrinology
- Cardiology
- Respiratory Medicine

Professional Development
We actively encourage flexibility and diversity of interests within our team. Existing consultants are supported in various special interests and roles, including Maternity Medicine, Toxicology, bedside ultrasound, postgraduate medical education, and governance. We recognize that recent trainees often possess unique skills or interests developed during their training, and we aim to integrate these into our team as fully as possible. Discussions regarding special skills and how they can be incorporated into the role and the wider Acute Medicine team can occur informally prior to the interview.
Clinical Responsibilities
A comprehensive range of emergency and elective patients are admitted to our institution, and the appointee will be responsible for managing those patients under their care. Responsibilities include:
- Providing a comprehensive elective and emergency Acute Medicine service in collaboration with Consultant colleagues
- Offering reciprocal cover during periods of leave
- Maintaining ongoing responsibility for the care of patients and the effective functioning of the department
These duties are subject to periodic review in light of the evolving needs of the service. Any changes to the described responsibilities will be mutually agreed upon by the appointee, their Consultant colleagues, and the Trust.
Governance and Audit
Each consultant is expected to actively participate in clinical governance activities, including clinical audits, incident reporting, complaint reviews, risk management, continuing professional development, and evidence-based practice. Each specialty has a designated Consultant Clinical Governance lead.
Teaching and Research
Both main campuses of our Trust serve as major centers for undergraduate and postgraduate education. The successful candidate will be expected to play a significant role in teaching at both levels.
