About the Role

We're seeking a highly skilled Strategic Operations Director to join our team at Tesco. As a key member of our Fulfilment operation, you will play a crucial role in supporting the success of our Online business.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Embrace working in an Agile environment, where colleagues take ownership of their work and collaborate to achieve common objectives and key results.
  • Ensure Tesco project management principles are followed, including partner management, project setup, budget control, and customer experience improvements.
  • Define clear project scope and objectives, ensuring projects remain on track and in scope.
  • Prioritise and engage with subject matter experts, leading and motivating them to contribute to project delivery.
  • Handle risk and issues, setting up and leading a clear governance programme.
  • Manage interdependencies and conflicts, working with others to deliver project objectives and benefits for customers, colleagues, and the planet.
  • Craft a clear implementation programme, working with the people and communications teams as required.
  • Supervise project progress and update partners, including business leaders, on results.
  • Achieve great results by encouraging, engaging, and leading others, making our customers and colleagues feel valued.
  • Take ownership of processes and systems, ensuring they are effective and efficient, and identify and resolve issues quickly.
  • Understand the importance of technology in the future of Tesco, ensuring digital is part of key decisions.
  • Be flexible in your approach, able to run multiple projects and programmes across different areas within Online, improving the shopping experience for customers or simplifying operations with new initiatives.
  • Close projects down once complete, completing a post-implementation review to understand lessons learned and share them with partners to ensure continuous improvement.

Your Team

As a Strategic Operations Director, you will be responsible for managing a team of Operations Development Managers.

Your Skills and Experience

  • Operation skills relevant for this job:
    • Understanding of Online business models and economics
    • People Management
    • Experience of executing a full project lifecycle
    • Strong strategy and proposition development, as well as analytical skills
    • Ability to bridge between critical thinking and pragmatic implementation
    • Sophisticated project/programme leadership skills
    • Strong stakeholder management ability
    • Excellent commercial competence and understanding of wider business context
    • Strong communication and storytelling skills (written and verbal)
    • Ability to influence at all levels
    • Experience in using advanced project management methodologies
  • Experience relevant for this job:
    • Retail operations
    • E2E Project Management experience, including management of a complex network of collaborators
    • Experience working in or delivering projects in Fulfilment/Supply Chain environments
    • Budget management and commercial savvy
    • An inquisitive outlook and growth mindset
    • Record of effective joint business planning and delivery of cross-functional initiatives from concept to trial and rollout
    • Experience of broad partner management, including executive levels and developing networks beyond your function
    • Strategy formulation, business development, corporate development in Online/Retail context
    • Experience sizing business opportunities and crafting business cases
    • Project Management Qualification (e.g. Six Sigma, APM)
