This position is for an Employment Support Peer Advocate within the Oxford Health NHS Trust's Adult Mental Health Services.

Employment Support Peer Advocates (ESPAs) are individuals who have navigated their own mental health challenges or have provided care for someone facing similar issues. They utilize their empathetic understanding, shaped by their experiences, to assist service users and their families who are engaging with mental health services.

Main Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this role is to provide peer support to individuals within the mental health services in Buckinghamshire. The Employment Support Peer Advocate will exemplify best practices related to recovery principles in their work. ESPAs will embody recovery principles alongside personal accountability, self-awareness, and self-care while fulfilling their responsibilities.

This role integrates lived experience into daily practice. Depending on the needs of the service, ESPAs will engage in both group and individual support, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to aid service users on their recovery paths. The post holder will facilitate both formal and informal learning opportunities, working alongside clinical staff to enhance recovery-oriented practices.

Job Responsibilities

We recognize that employment can significantly enhance an individual's recovery and overall well-being. The Individual Placement Support (IPS) service assists individuals receiving care from our mental health teams who are unemployed and eager to secure paid employment or whose current jobs may be at risk.

An IPS Employment Support Peer Advocate is a vital member of the IPS team, possessing similar life experiences to those receiving IPS services. ESPAs share their journeys of overcoming challenges to achieve career aspirations and continue progressing in their recovery.

The IPS Employment Support Peer Advocate will lead a bi-weekly IPS Peer Support Group, providing a platform for clients and their families to discuss their employment experiences. They will also conduct workshops focused on employment skills.

Utilizing their lived experience, an IPS Employment Support Peer Advocate will assist clients in effectively representing themselves and establishing strong relationships with potential employers. This may include helping clients articulate their mental health experiences, develop positive narratives, build confidence for interviews, explain employment gaps, create resumes, set employment objectives, identify their skills, and practice strategies for maintaining well-being in the workplace.

This position is primarily based in a community setting, with the successful candidate working both remotely and in various locations. A valid driver's license and access to a vehicle are required. This is a part-time role, and preferred working hours will be discussed during the interview process.

We seek individuals who are empathetic, collaborative, highly motivated, and possess excellent communication skills. Comprehensive training will be provided, along with the opportunity to complete a nationally recognized care certificate.

Training and Development

Oxford Health offers a Peer Support Training program, which is a nationally recognized accredited Level 3 Apprenticeship, fully funded by the organization.

The Peer Advocate Apprenticeship spans 15-19 months, depending on whether the individual works part-time or full-time.

Eligibility for the Apprenticeship requires GCSE/Level 2 qualifications in Maths and English. Candidates will need to provide evidence of these qualifications. If you do not possess these qualifications, we welcome your application for consideration, but you will need to complete functional skills courses in Maths and/or English while in the role before enrolling in the Apprenticeship. All new Employment Support Peer Advocates will receive training and support from a tutor and supervisor during their working hours.

Lived Experience Responsibilities:

  • Assist service users in effectively engaging with the care provided and accessing appropriate services.
  • Utilize lived experience and active listening to inspire hope, offer empathy, empower individuals, build confidence, and validate their feelings.
  • Establish relationships based on mutual respect, facilitating regular and practical support, both individually and in group settings, to help service users develop independence while maintaining dignity and self-respect.
  • Promote independent living for service users by modeling individual recovery journeys.
  • Ensure that the needs of individual service users are prioritized in all practices, employing skills acquired through Peer Support Training.
