Role Summary:

In this pivotal role, you will report to the Automation Systems Lead and collaborate closely with software engineers and system specification leads within the development team. Your responsibilities will include supporting the design, implementation, and management of intricate engineering systems at Royal Mail. You will evaluate and manage change requests from the business concerning existing systems provided by automation suppliers. Your work will involve collaboration with various business functions, including Group Technology, International, Operations, and Revenue Protection, and will encompass multiple projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conducting thorough investigations of ongoing issues utilizing various tools and techniques, including data analysis and stakeholder discussions.
  • Working alongside senior engineers on system and software updates for parcel and letter automation systems.
  • Assisting in the development and revision of system requirements for parcel and letter automation.
  • Supporting system integration testing of initial articles in both manufacturing facilities and during installations.
  • Facilitating integration testing of subsequent articles during deployment and routine operations.
  • Contributing to the development of applications that integrate parcel automation systems.
  • Analyzing and providing technical support for parcel automation performance, including diagnosis and troubleshooting.
  • Engaging in defect and design change management processes for deployed parcel automation systems, ensuring timely resolution of issues in collaboration with suppliers and the engineering team.
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of parcel and letter automation systems.
  • Ensuring successful delivery of parcel automation deployment activities valued up to £10 million, critical to Royal Mail's operations.
  • Providing on-site support, detailed analysis, and incident management with suppliers to implement parcel automation solutions.
  • Fostering relationships across cross-functional teams, including automation suppliers, engineering design, and central engineering maintenance.
  • Effectively communicating with internal and external stakeholders, including Original Equipment Manufacturers and Project Management Teams.

Candidate Profile:

To excel in this position, you should possess the following skills and experience:

  • Interest in developing, deploying, and testing software packages and updates.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of conveying technical engineering knowledge to diverse audiences.
  • Experience in data and root cause analysis using various data sources and tools.
  • Familiarity with automated processes, equipment, and machinery.
  • Knowledge of automation data interface specifications and systems testing.
  • Experience collaborating with technology professionals to integrate engineering solutions into corporate systems.
  • Proficiency in collaboration tools such as Confluence, JIRA, and SharePoint.
  • Ability to interpret and develop systems requirements.
  • Capacity to manage multiple priorities across various work streams.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
  • Proven experience in staying updated with the latest technology trends in system and software engineering.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience with scripting or programming languages such as Python or Bash.
  • Familiarity with parcel automation and address reading technologies.
  • A track record of contributing to the design and development of parcel and letter automation systems.
  • Relevant qualifications in Engineering, Technical, or Scientific disciplines.
  • Health & Safety Management qualifications.
  • Accreditation from a recognized institution at an Incorporated or Chartered Level.
