TEAM INSIGHT

Northumbria University's Healthy Living Lab stands at the forefront of research in the UK, addressing public health and food insecurity issues affecting marginalized social groups and underrepresented communities.

Focus areas encompass school and community food programs as well as initiatives to combat holiday hunger.

The lab comprises over twenty academic professionals dedicated to developing, informing, and assessing community and school-based interventions through applied research, training, and consultancy.

Our expertise spans multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, nutritional science, computer science, public health, and sports science, enabling us to tackle public health challenges comprehensively.

The Healthy Living Lab excels in co-designing research projects with stakeholders and user groups, particularly young children, employing diverse methodologies to amplify children's perspectives.

Crucially, the Lab ensures that children's voices are not only acknowledged but also integrated into the dissemination of research findings and future dialogues.

The successful candidate will collaborate within the Department of Applied Sciences and alongside colleagues from the Department of Social Work, Education, and Community Wellbeing.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Department of Applied Sciences specializes in biological and chemical sciences, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in accredited disciplines such as Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Food Science & Nutrition, and Forensic Science.

We boast a team of over 80 academics engaged in research across these fields, supported by 60 postdoctoral research associates, research fellows, and PhD candidates, alongside a vibrant undergraduate cohort of approximately 1,500 students.

The Department has a proven track record of impactful interdisciplinary research, often in partnership with industry and backed by UKRI funding.

With 86% of our staff contributing to REF2021, we proudly report that 82% of the Department's publications were rated as internationally excellent and world-leading.

More than 60 colleagues in the Department participated in our REF2021 submission to the Allied Health Unit of Assessment 3, which ranked 8th (out of 91) in the UK for Research Power.

Additionally, our Research Environment received the highest possible rating of 100% 4*, recognizing our excellence and state-of-the-art facilities for conducting research.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of our Department and research activities, we enjoy fruitful collaborations with colleagues in related fields such as Psychology, Sport, and Rehabilitation.

This is exemplified through NUTRAN, the interdisciplinary research group conducting leading research trials and human participant studies, exploring the influence of nutrition on health and performance.
