TEAM INSIGHT

Northumbria University's Healthy Living Lab stands at the forefront of research addressing public health and food insecurity among marginalized social groups and underrepresented communities.

Key areas of research include school and community food provision programs and addressing holiday hunger.

The lab comprises over twenty academic professionals dedicated to developing, informing, and evaluating community and school-based interventions through applied research, training, and consultancy.

Our expertise spans multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, nutritional science, computer science, public health, and sports science, enabling us to tackle public health challenges comprehensively.

The Healthy Living Lab is particularly skilled in co-designing research projects with stakeholders and user groups, especially young children, employing various methodologies to capture their perspectives.

Importantly, the Lab ensures that children's voices are not only heard but also integrated into the dissemination of research findings and future discussions.

The successful candidate will collaborate within the Department of Applied Sciences and alongside colleagues from the Department of Social Work, Education, and Community Wellbeing.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Department of Applied Sciences specializes in biological and chemical sciences, providing education to undergraduate and postgraduate students in accredited programs in Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Food Science & Nutrition, and Forensic Science.

Our department is home to over 80 academics engaged in research, supported by 60 postdoctoral research associates, research fellows, and PhD candidates, alongside a vibrant undergraduate community of approximately 1,500 students.

We have a strong history of impactful interdisciplinary research, often in partnership with industry and backed by UKRI funding.

With 86% of our staff submitted to REF2021, we are proud to report that 82% of our publications were rated as internationally excellent and world-leading.

More than 60 colleagues contributed to our REF2021 submission to the Allied Health Unit of Assessment 3, which ranked 8th out of 91 in the UK for Research Power.

Furthermore, our Research Environment received the highest rating of 100% 4*, recognizing our excellence and state-of-the-art facilities for conducting research.

Our department's multidisciplinary nature fosters fruitful collaborations with colleagues in related fields such as Psychology, Sport, and Rehabilitation.

This is exemplified through NUTRAN, an interdisciplinary research group conducting pioneering research trials and human participant studies to explore the effects of nutrition on health and performance.
