Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Working towards a full qualification with the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) or an equivalent qualification at NVQ level 4.
  • Effectively communicating both verbally and in writing, including the ability to convey complex financial information.
  • Demonstrating adaptability and working collaboratively within a team in a demanding environment.

Job Duties

Purpose of the Role

  • Support the Senior Management Accountant in producing integrated, efficient, and accurate management accounting information for senior finance teams and decision-makers.
  • Assist in providing financial information and advice to decision-makers, external agencies, and partner organizations.
  • Ensure financial data is processed according to approved procedures through personal contributions and coordination of team efforts.
  • Collaborate with all departments to provide financial information, advice, and support.
  • Assist in managing budgets for Personal Health Commissioning (PHC), including month-end processes, monitoring expenditures, and forecasting.
  • Investigate complex inquiries to provide necessary advice and contribute to corporate reporting and business planning.
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions with stakeholders, ensuring timely and clear communication.

Specific Tasks and Objectives

You will support the Senior Management Accountant as the finance lead for Personal Health Commissioning, responsible for delivering complex financial information that requires a solid understanding of financial procedures and NHS finance regulations. The Management Accounting function is essential for providing financial insights that enable effective organizational operations and informed decision-making.

The role of Assistant Financial Manager includes:

  • Establishing and maintaining communication regarding complex financial matters, often requiring the ability to simplify information for non-financial audiences.
  • Assisting in setting PHC budgets, maintaining financial forecasts, and analyzing variances from established budgets.
  • Calculating monthly accruals and provisions related to PHC.
  • Monitoring and analyzing complex expenditure trends and budget performance, identifying significant issues and providing advice.
  • Preparing and posting financial journals.
  • Assisting in completing financial returns and supporting non-financial information requirements.
  • Handling confidential financial and patient data in compliance with organizational policies.
  • Managing line responsibilities for assigned staff.
  • Developing and maintaining desktop procedures for financial processes to ensure efficiency and accuracy.
  • Utilizing major financial management systems to process and analyze information for accurate reporting.
  • Assisting in identifying and mitigating financial risks.
  • Participating in project work as required.
  • Providing coverage for team members during absences.
  • Being prepared to work additional hours during year-end processes.

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

Essential

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and meet deadlines.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Part Qualified (Finalist/Diploma) Professional Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) Accountancy Qualification.
  • Fully qualified AAT or actively pursuing full AAT qualification / Proven Professional Accountancy qualification at NVQ level 4.

Experience

Essential

  • Recent experience in a comparable role at a similar level.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
  • Experience in engaging with internal and external stakeholders with a customer-focused approach.
  • Experience in the NHS or local government sector.
