Position Overview

An exceptional opportunity has emerged for a dedicated and skilled physiotherapist to join the breast care unit at York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

We are in search of a physiotherapist with outstanding communication abilities to collaborate with our highly specialized physiotherapy team and contribute to the breast care unit.

The team is committed to delivering a comprehensive and adaptable patient-centered approach tailored to the unique needs of individuals at various stages of their treatment journey.

This role presents an excellent chance to enhance your expertise in managing this specific patient demographic.

Key Responsibilities

You will have the opportunity and resources to cultivate specialized skills in the physiotherapy assessment and management of patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

Your responsibilities will include working with patients post-breast cancer surgery, offering guidance on shoulder mobility, strategies for reducing risks associated with lymphoedema, and management techniques for cording and scar tissue.

A significant aspect of this role involves developing proficiency in assessing and managing breast cancer-related lymphoedema, focusing on patient education, information dissemination, and support to empower them in self-care and condition management. Continuous training and support will be provided to help you develop the necessary skills to manage this patient group effectively. This includes collaboration with the specialized physiotherapist, observation, supervision, service enhancement, and participation in external training courses. Treatment modalities encompass simple lymphatic drainage, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise management, and advice on compression garments.

The service is dedicated to advancing and refining physiotherapy practices in alignment with local and national standards. Participation in service development and audits is an essential requirement. The service primarily operates in an outpatient setting.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Degree in Physiotherapy.
  • HCPC Registered Physiotherapist.
  • Evidence of relevant specialist postgraduate CPD activities.
  • Demonstrated theoretical learning pertinent to the role.

Desirable

  • Practice placement supervisor qualification.

Experience & Knowledge Required

Essential

  • Experience in a relevant junior role, managing a variety of conditions, with evidence of additional knowledge gained through formal and informal training and supervision.
  • Developed/specialist clinical skills in the relevant area.
  • Experience in delivering relevant audits and service improvements.
  • Ability to manage complex clinical presentations.
  • Demonstrated application of theoretical learning to clinical practice across diverse situations.
  • Experience in assessing and providing specialist equipment.
  • Experience in delivering clinical treatment within the specialist area.
  • Understanding of current healthcare standards and professional practice.

Desirable

  • Experience using outcome measures to evaluate clinical treatment.
  • Experience in training/supporting others (including students) within the specialist clinical area.
  • Experience in delivering relevant research projects.
