Role Overview:

The retail operations at AGS airports primarily function on a concession model, where the airport earns a percentage of the retailer's sales as 'rent'. It is essential for the airport and retailers to collaborate closely to identify the factors influencing performance and develop joint strategies for enhancement. The Airport Retail Operations Manager plays a crucial role within the Southampton Airport leadership team and the broader AGS Commercial team. Reporting directly to the Head of Retail Operations and Performance, this position will oversee the trading performance, operational standards, and quality of third-party retail and food and beverage units at the airport, as well as any managed contracts.

With anticipated rapid passenger growth and a shift from a business-focused to a leisure-oriented passenger profile, Southampton Airport is at a pivotal moment. Plans are underway to ensure the airport achieves commercial success and operational excellence in alignment with increasing passenger numbers and evolving customer profiles. This role is vital in executing our growth strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary contact for all retail operations at the airport
  • Oversee retail, food and beverage, and vending operations
  • Manage communication of business updates to partners, ensuring all stakeholders have the necessary information to optimize service and sales
  • Foster a 'culture of transparency' by collaborating with retailers and other stakeholders to share business and trading updates
  • Maximize income generation from all airport retail categories through data analysis and stakeholder engagement
  • Develop expertise in retail categories, understanding trends, dynamics, and customer behaviors
  • Ensure operational excellence and superior customer service across all retail operations through effective contract management and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Enhance commercial awareness throughout the airport by advising senior leadership on retail-related matters
  • Drive profitability from managed contracts by scrutinizing costs and implementing sales action plans
  • Collaborate with the AGS marketing team to define the retail marketing strategy and ensure retailer participation
  • Encourage commercial partners to adopt safe and secure practices in line with airport health and safety objectives through regular audits
  • Promote sustainable operational practices among commercial partners in alignment with AGS's sustainability goals
  • As a key member of the airport leadership team, participate in crisis management efforts during emergency situations

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Demonstrated success in a retail or commercial role, preferably within an airport or similar environment
  • Strong commercial insight and a high level of analytical and financial acumen
  • Well-developed influencing and negotiation skills
  • Effective communication abilities across all organizational levels
  • Customer-oriented with a proven track record of developing compelling customer propositions
  • Evidence of innovation and entrepreneurial thinking, with the ability to rigorously test and implement new ideas
  • Strong relationship-building skills, both internally and externally
