Role Overview:

The retail operations at AGS airports primarily function on a concession model, where the airport earns a percentage of the retailer's sales as rent. It is essential for the airport and retailers to collaborate closely to comprehend the factors influencing performance and to develop joint action plans for improvement.
The Airport Retail Operations Manager plays a crucial role within the Southampton Airport leadership team and the broader AGS Commercial team. Reporting directly to the Head of Retail Operations and Performance, this position will oversee trading performance, operational standards, and the management of third-party retail and food and beverage units at the airport, along with any managed contracts.
As Southampton Airport anticipates significant passenger growth and shifts towards a leisure-focused business model, strategic plans are being formulated to ensure commercial success and operational excellence. This role is vital in executing our growth strategies.
The responsibilities include managing existing retail operations and implementing initiatives to continuously enhance income and adapt the product offerings to meet evolving customer demands.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary contact for all retail sectors at Southampton Airport
  • Oversee retail, food and beverage, and vending operations
  • Manage communication of business updates to partners, ensuring all stakeholders have the necessary information to optimize service and sales
  • Foster a culture of transparency by collaborating with retailers and other stakeholders to share business and trading updates
  • Maximize income generation from all airport retail categories through data analysis and stakeholder engagement
  • Develop expertise in retail categories, understanding trends, dynamics, and growth levers, along with customer profiles and behaviors
  • Ensure operational excellence and superior customer service across all retail operations through effective contract management and continuous improvement practices
  • Enhance commercial awareness throughout the airport by influencing senior leadership on retail-related matters and opportunities
  • Drive profitability from managed contracts by scrutinizing costs and implementing sales action plans
  • Collaborate with the AGS marketing team to define the retail marketing strategy and ensure retailer and advertising client participation
  • Encourage commercial partners to adopt safe and secure practices in alignment with airport health and safety objectives through regular audits
  • Promote a sustainable operational approach among commercial partners in line with AGS's sustainability targets
  • As a key member of the Southampton Airport leadership team, participate in crisis management efforts during emergency situations

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Demonstrated success in a retail or commercial role, preferably within an airport or similar environment
  • Strong commercial insight and a high level of analytical and financial expertise
  • Well-developed influencing and negotiation skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels
  • Customer-centric mindset with experience in developing compelling customer propositions
  • Proven track record of innovation and entrepreneurial thinking, with the ability to rigorously test and implement new ideas
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills, both internally and externally
