Role Overview:

The retail operations at AGS airports primarily function on a concession model, where the airport earns a percentage of the retailer's sales as 'rent'. It is essential for airports and retailers to collaborate closely to identify the factors influencing performance and to develop joint action plans for enhancement and growth. The Retail Operations Performance Leader will play a crucial role within the Southampton Airport leadership team and the broader AGS Commercial team. Reporting directly to the Head of Retail Operations and Performance, this position will oversee trading performance, operational standards, and quality for third-party operated retail and food and beverage outlets at the airport, along with any managed contracts.

With Southampton Airport poised for significant passenger growth and a shift from a business-focused to a leisure-oriented profile, this role is critical in executing our commercial success and operational excellence strategies in alignment with evolving passenger demographics. The incumbent will be responsible for optimizing performance from existing retail operations while implementing strategies to continually enhance revenue and adapt the product offerings to meet changing customer preferences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary contact for all retail sectors at Southampton Airport
  • Oversee retail, food and beverage, and vending operations
  • Manage communication of business updates to partners, ensuring all stakeholders have the necessary information and data to maximize service and sales
  • Foster a 'culture of no surprises' by collaborating with retailers and other stakeholders to share business and trading updates
  • Maximize income generation from all airport retail categories through data analysis and stakeholder engagement
  • Develop expertise in retail categories (trends, dynamics, growth levers) and gain in-depth customer insights (profile, behavior, value)
  • Ensure operational excellence and superior customer service across all retail operations through effective contract management and continuous improvement practices
  • Enhance commercial awareness throughout the airport by influencing senior leadership on retail-related matters and opportunities
  • Drive profitability from managed contracts by scrutinizing costs and implementing sales action plans
  • Define the retail marketing strategy in collaboration with the AGS marketing team, ensuring retailer and advertising client participation
  • Encourage commercial partners to adopt safe and secure practices in line with airport health and safety objectives through auditing key safety activities as needed
  • Promote a sustainable operational approach among commercial partners in alignment with AGS's targets
  • As a vital member of the Southampton Airport leadership team, contribute to crisis management efforts during emergency situations

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Demonstrated success in a retail or commercial role, preferably within an airport or similar environment
  • Strong commercial insight and advanced analytical/financial skills
  • Well-developed influencing and negotiation abilities
  • Effective communication skills across all organizational levels
  • Customer-centric approach with a proven track record of developing strong customer propositions
