About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Counsel to join our team at HS2. As a key member of our legal team, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality legal support to our business, ensuring that we operate within a compliant and risk-managed environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the provision of legal support, including drafting documents and providing advice on commercial and contracts law, to ensure that the Company is not exposed to undue risk and that consistent business standards are adhered to.
  • Provide statutory advice as required, ensuring that we comply with all relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Assist with the resolution of contractual claims and disputes, including supporting the management of external lawyers where necessary.
  • Manage the provision of external legal support, including responsibility for managing and monitoring costs, assisting with the setting of budgets and timescales, and ensuring quality.
  • Contribute to the preparation and drafting of reports and briefings for senior management, supporting the decision-making process.
Requirements
  • Qualified solicitor or barrister, with 2-4 years of post-qualification experience, gained in private practice or in-house.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: commercial law, procurement law, construction law.
  • Experience of advising in the UK public sector, such as in government departments, utilities, or transport projects, would be beneficial but not essential.
  • Ability to distil complex legal issues into easily understood advice, providing pragmatic, commercial, and solution-focused guidance to clients at all levels of the organisation.
  • Ability to prepare legal drafting with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Initiative and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to work in a multidisciplinary team to achieve a mutually desired outcome.
  • Ability to balance and prioritise numerous tasks, while delivering to deadlines.
