Position Overview

Job Title: Deprescribing Clinic
Contract: 6 months fixed-term with potential for extension
Band: Grade: For medical applicants: ST 1-3 or equivalent medical qualifications and experience. For non-medical applicants: Band 7 or above prescribing clinician (prescribing pharmacist or nurse prescriber).
Reporting To: Professor Moncrieff, Reader, UCL and honorary consultant, NELFT.

This role is a non-accredited clinical position based at NELFT, focusing on delivering clinical services within the psychiatric drug deprescribing clinic.

The clinic aims to assist individuals in discontinuing unnecessary psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, benzodiazepines, z-drugs, gabapentinoids, and antipsychotics, primarily for common mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Referrals are made by local GPs within the NELFT catchment area, with supervision provided by Professor Moncrieff, a consultant psychiatrist.

Main Responsibilities

The position is open to Specialty Registrars (ST4-6) in run-through training or those with equivalent qualifications and experience. Applicants currently in training should consult their Training Programme Director(s) prior to applying and may seek recognition of the post for training purposes through the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Key duties include:

  • Evaluating referrals for clinic suitability alongside Professor Moncrieff.
  • Conducting initial patient assessments and formulating reduction plans.
  • Regular follow-ups with patients to monitor progress and modify reduction regimens as necessary.
  • Maintaining communication with GPs throughout the process.

Non-Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Supervising pharmacists and other clinicians shadowing the clinic.
  • Providing educational talks to primary care physicians about the clinic's services.
  • Administering baseline and progress surveys to patients.
  • Monitoring clinic performance and submitting annual progress reports to the LTC board.

Compensation and Benefits

This position includes a High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary, with a minimum of £4,108 and a maximum of £5,177.

  • Minimum of 1 year of prescribing experience.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in deprescribing.
  • Previous NHS experience.
