JOB TITLE: Deprescribing Clinic
CONTRACT: Fixed term, with potential for extension
BAND: For medical applicants: ST 1-3 or equivalent qualifications; for non-medical applicants: Band 7 or higher as a prescribing clinician (pharmacist or nurse prescriber)
REPORTING TO: Professor Moncrieff, Reader at UCL and honorary consultant at NELFT

This role is a non-accredited clinical position based at NELFT, aimed at delivering specialized services within the psychiatric drug deprescribing clinic.

The clinic has been established to assist individuals in discontinuing unnecessary psychiatric medications, including antidepressants, benzodiazepines, z-drugs, gabapentinoids, and antipsychotics, primarily for common mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Referrals are received from local general practitioners within the NELFT service area. Supervision will be provided by Professor Moncrieff, a consultant psychiatrist.

For medical candidates, this position qualifies as an 'out of programme experience' (OOPE), with the possibility of recognition for training purposes through the Royal College of Psychiatrists. One full-time equivalent position is available at NELFT.

Key Responsibilities

This role is open to Specialty Registrars (ST4-6) in run-through training or those with equivalent qualifications. Candidates currently in training should consult with their Training Programme Director before applying and subsequently seek approval from the London School of Psychiatry for an OOPE.

Responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating referrals for clinic suitability alongside Professor Moncrieff
  • Conducting initial patient assessments and formulating reduction plans
  • Regular follow-ups with patients to monitor progress and modify reduction strategies as needed
  • Liaising with GPs throughout the process

Non-Clinical Duties:

  • Overseeing pharmacists and other clinicians shadowing the clinic, facilitating discussions on deprescribing techniques.
  • Presenting information to primary care physicians about the clinic's services.
  • Administering baseline and progress surveys to patients.
  • Monitoring clinic outcomes and preparing annual progress reports.
