Position Overview

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is currently inviting applications for a Senior Physiotherapist specializing in Respiratory Outpatient Services. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with the Respiratory Pathway Lead, a specialized nursing team in respiratory care, and respiratory consultants to ensure a high standard of patient-centered service delivery. The patient demographic includes individuals with conditions such as Bronchiectasis, Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, and various breathing pattern disorders.

You will possess advanced clinical skills in respiratory care, enabling you to assess and manage complex cases effectively. You should be prepared to critically evaluate existing practices and ensure that patients receive the most current evidence-based interventions. Strong communication skills are essential for fostering productive relationships with both patients and colleagues. Additionally, you will play a key role in mentoring others, enhancing their knowledge and skills in managing a diverse range of respiratory conditions in an outpatient context.

Main Responsibilities

The primary duties of this role include:

  • Delivering a comprehensive and specialized Physiotherapy service for respiratory outpatients, focusing on conditions such as Bronchiectasis, Asthma, COPD, Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, and breathing pattern disorders, within both independent physiotherapy clinics and a multidisciplinary team framework.
  • Providing expert advice and education to junior Physiotherapists, students, and other healthcare professionals regarding the management of respiratory patients, particularly those with COPD, Bronchiectasis, breathing pattern disorders, Asthma, and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia.

Your primary workplace will be the Bristol Royal Infirmary, with outpatient clinics conducted at various UHBW locations. Flexibility to travel between sites is required, and participation in weekend, bank holiday, and on-call rotas will be expected.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Degree in Physiotherapy or equivalent
  • HCPC registration
  • Evidence of relevant postgraduate training in respiratory care

Desirable

  • Further qualification (MSc or equivalent) in Physiotherapy or a related field
  • Membership in the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP)
  • Membership in relevant local/national Clinical Interest Groups (e.g., ACPRC)
  • Management training
  • Non-medical prescribing qualification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience at a senior level in respiratory physiotherapy services
  • Prior experience as a Band 6 or equivalent physiotherapist in acute respiratory settings
  • Experience in managing people, including undergraduate students
  • Knowledge and experience in utilizing clinical outcome measures and conducting audits
  • Extensive experience in clinical supervision, mentoring, and teaching

Desirable

  • Previous experience within the NHS
  • Experience working on respiratory weekend/on-call rotas
  • Experience in managing patients with dysfunctional breathing
