Essex Police is expanding its Estate Services Department and is in search of a Senior Electrical Systems Engineer to join a dynamic and skilled team. This is a pivotal moment to become part of a department that is undertaking a significant array of new construction and renovation initiatives across the organization.

The successful candidate will integrate into the broader Design and Engineering team within Capital Projects, offering technical assurance on design, security, sustainability, fire safety, construction design management (CDM), mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, cost management, and design throughout all RIBA stages.

The team oversees all property-related issues, ranging from minor repairs to large-scale projects. Currently, they are executing a comprehensive estate transformation program aimed at modernizing facilities to ensure they meet the needs of policing both now and in the future.

The ideal candidate will possess a professional background and must be a member of CIBSE, holding relevant qualifications that showcase extensive practical and technical expertise within a large organization in building services management. Professional qualifications such as IEng or CEng are mandatory.

Applicants should have a minimum of four years' post-qualification experience in electrical design and/or construction building services engineering within a sizable organization.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Interpreting design guidelines and employer requirements into effective briefing materials for delivery partners and subcontractors during procurement, design, and construction phases.
  • Conducting technical assurance and due diligence of building systems designs at critical project stages, specifically RIBA stages 2 to 6.
  • Delivering MEP property projects, ideally with experience in an engineering consultancy or client organization.
  • Providing insights on work package lifecycle costs as part of design management.
  • Demonstrating hands-on skills, adaptability, and a client-focused approach.
  • Exhibiting professional credibility, self-motivation, proactivity, and effective knowledge sharing.
  • Developing project-specific employer requirements for MEP projects.
  • Engaging with customers involved in electrical engineering projects.
  • Collaborating closely with other professionals, including structural engineers, architects, surveyors, and contractors from both in-house and external project teams.

At the shortlisting stage, we will evaluate candidates based on:

  • Experience in overseeing and supervising the installation of building systems and specifying maintenance and operational procedures.
  • Ensuring that the design and maintenance of building systems comply with legislative and health and safety standards.
  • Leading a team to deliver detailed design projects.
  • Proficiency in engineering software such as Amtech, Dialux, and AutoCAD.
  • Capability to manage projects from inception through design and construction, including final accounts, with evidence of effective problem-solving.
  • A solid understanding of financial procedures, contract management, surveying skills, and project stages.

Essex Police employees enjoy various benefits, including:

  • Flexitime with potential for additional non-working days.
  • Employee wellbeing programs.
  • Enrollment in the local authority pension scheme.
  • Collaboration with a dedicated and supportive team of property professionals committed to making a positive impact in Essex.
  • Working within a non-profit organization.

Successful candidates will be classified as office-based agile workers, primarily working in one office space while also having the flexibility to work from home or other police site locations.

All positions require a level of vetting and security clearance. During the recruitment process, candidates will be required to complete vetting information forms.
