Cardiac Technologist - Band 5

Employment Type: Permanent - Full-time hours per week

Whittington Hospital NHS Trust is located in a dynamic and lively area of North London, offering excellent transport connections.

The Cardiology Investigations Unit at Whittington Health is a compact yet busy department providing comprehensive non-invasive cardiology and standard echocardiography services for both pediatric and adult patients. Additionally, we operate a pacemaker follow-up clinic catering to the local community. The department currently collaborates with four cardiologists and works in conjunction with various services, including RACPC and heart failure, while also supporting a diverse range of other specialties such as oncology, respiratory care, maternity, and geriatric care.

We are looking for qualified and motivated Cardiac Technologists to become part of our welcoming team.

Candidates may be newly or recently qualified cardiac technologists and should possess a BSc (Hons) in Clinical Physiology (Cardiology) or an equivalent qualification. Ideally, applicants should have a year of broad experience in non-invasive cardiology and demonstrate proficiency in a variety of non-invasive procedures. Training in echocardiography and pacing can be provided to suitable candidates.

Candidates should be prepared to work towards RCCP/AHCS registration.

Key Responsibilities

As a member of a skilled team of Cardiac Technologists, you will provide non-invasive cardiac assessments for both inpatients and outpatients.

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting the following routine non-invasive clinical physiological tests: ECGs, stress tests, ambulatory blood pressure and ECG monitoring, and event recorders.

You will provide factual reports for all routine assessments under supervision to assist medical staff in making clinical decisions regarding patient care.

Maintain discipline and uphold standards of technical proficiency in delivering non-invasive investigative services within the department.

Actively contribute to the smooth daily operations of the department, including confirming ECGs, dispatching reports to GPs and consultants, and managing phone inquiries.

Job Duties

  • Actively engage in providing a non-invasive cardiac assessment service following a comprehensive training and assessment period.
  • Perform and interpret electrocardiograms on both adults and children.
  • Apply, remove, and analyze ambulatory ECG and blood pressure equipment, confidently generating comprehensive and accurate reports.
  • Apply, remove, and analyze event monitors, confidently generating comprehensive and accurate reports.
  • Conduct exercise/treadmill testing under the supervision of a senior colleague, preparing patients, accurately recording data, and monitoring blood pressure and ECG signals.
  • Be fully knowledgeable of emergency cardiac arrest procedures, including defibrillation, while maintaining composure in high-pressure situations.
  • Assist senior colleagues with pacemaker follow-up assessments.
  • Document patient diagnostic and management information using both manual and computerized systems.
  • Maintain accurate and legible patient records in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Identify technical or equipment malfunctions and take corrective actions following departmental protocols.
  • Ensure all equipment is operated safely, cleaned, and stored according to departmental guidelines.
  • Coordinate technical support for repairs and maintenance as needed.
  • Assist with daily administrative tasks.
  • Address patient inquiries both over the phone and in person.
  • Distribute results and reports to GPs and consultants.
  • Maintain adequate stock levels of consumables used within the department and appropriately receive and store new stock.
  • Provide training and support to undergraduate trainees, nursing staff, and medical students.
  • Collaborate with senior colleagues in the introduction and evaluation of new equipment and technology.
  • Assist senior colleagues in updating and developing policies related to practice.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential

  • BSc in Cardiac Physiology or an equivalent qualification.
  • Some experience in an NHS setting.

  • Proficient in exercise stress test performance.
  • Awareness and understanding of current cardiology issues.
