Position Overview

The successful candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to spearhead the development, execution, and assessment of the Burns and Plastics specialist nursing service, ensuring that patients receive exemplary clinical care.

The role involves actively engaging in clinical activities and audits within the Burns and Plastics domain. The individual will play a pivotal role in enhancing clinical practices and care standards, which includes formulating policies, procedures, protocols, and guidelines. Additionally, the candidate will take a leadership position in service advancements in partnership with multidisciplinary colleagues and will oversee a dedicated team of Clinical Nurse Specialists.

Key Responsibilities

The individual will be accountable for leading and managing the Burns and Plastics outreach service, coordinating with colleagues across various wards and community settings. Responsibilities include:

  • Serving as a primary contact for nursing within the specialist field.
  • Participating in specialty multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Managing a caseload of patients and overseeing their care.
  • Handling referrals from diverse sources while providing expert wound care advice and treatment.

The candidate will also engage in teaching and training within other departments, adapting the role and that of the team in response to evolving patient needs, service demands, and research findings, as well as national and local policies and guidelines.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Adult/Child Nurse on the NMC Register (field dependent upon role).
  • Evidence of post-registration continuing professional development (CPD) or qualifications in the relevant specialty, supplemented by specialist experience and short courses equivalent to degree/masters level (FHEQ Level 6/7).
  • Completion of a recognized mentorship course.
  • Non-medical prescriber qualification or willingness to pursue (where applicable).

Desirable

  • Working towards or possessing a Master’s qualification.
  • Engagement in advanced health assessment training (where applicable).

Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrated ability to revalidate as required by the NMC.
  • Significant post-registration experience at Band 6 or above as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in a relevant field.
  • Proven leadership and management capabilities within a team setting.
  • Understanding of management responsibilities for both pay and non-pay resources associated with clinical services.
  • Experience in delivering change management initiatives.
  • Evidence of professional development and achievements in current roles.
  • Specialist knowledge supported by theory and CPD relevant to the specialty.
  • Experience in developing educational programs and supervising others in clinical settings.
  • Involvement in service development initiatives.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary and cross-agency environments.
  • Expert nursing knowledge with the ability to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate specialist care.
  • Awareness of current NHS policy context related to the specialty.
  • Understanding of safeguarding principles.
  • Knowledge of corporate and clinical governance.

Desirable

  • Experience in patient/user advocacy roles.
