Position Overview

The Specialist Nurse in Epilepsy Care plays a pivotal role in delivering comprehensive support to adults with learning disabilities and epilepsy. This position is essential for ensuring that the unique health requirements of these individuals are addressed effectively, while facilitating access to specialized health services as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality clinical care and professional support to adults with learning disabilities and epilepsy, along with their families and caregivers.
  • Utilize expert communication skills and specialized knowledge to conduct thorough assessments and interventions tailored to individual needs.
  • Collaborate with service users, families, and a variety of healthcare professionals across primary, secondary, and tertiary care settings.
  • Provide training and guidance on health improvement, health promotion, and effective epilepsy management.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of epilepsy, seizure management, and relevant legislation, including the Mental Capacity Act.

Professional Development

The Specialist Nurse will engage in ongoing professional development, ensuring that care delivery is evidence-based and adheres to national standards and guidelines. Responsibilities include:

  • Creating and managing individualized risk assessments and epilepsy management protocols.
  • Acting as an autonomous practitioner with a dedicated clinical caseload.
  • Maintaining accurate and contemporaneous records using appropriate electronic systems.
  • Participating actively in personal and team development initiatives.

Essential Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with a focus on Learning Disabilities.
  • Diploma or higher qualification in epilepsy care.
  • Experience in mentorship or teaching roles.
  • A minimum of three years of post-registration experience.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Independent non-medical prescriber or willingness to pursue this qualification.
  • Achievement of 'expert nurse' status within the Learning Disability Epilepsy Nurse Specialist Framework.
