Job Title: Junior Systems Administrator

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Junior Systems Administrator to join our Research Computing team at the John Innes Centre. As a key member of our team, you will provide technical support and maintenance for our research computing infrastructure, ensuring that our systems are secure, reliable, and meet the needs of our researchers.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support and maintenance for our research computing infrastructure, including Linux-based systems, networked storage, and high-performance computing systems.
  • Work with our Service Management and Infrastructure Groups to ensure that user-facing services are maintained, secure, and fit for purpose.
  • Collaborate with our Computing Department to configure new Linux-based virtual machines for internal and end-user requirements.
  • Assist with diagnosing and solving technical problems, and provide guidance and support to our researchers and staff.
  • Develop and maintain documentation for our systems and procedures, and provide training and support to our team members.

Requirements:

  • IT/Computing BTEC HND/HNC level or equivalent.
  • Certificated courses in Linux, hardware, and networking.
  • Good knowledge of the Linux/UNIX command line and system administration.
  • Simple programming or scripting, preferably in a Linux/UNIX environment.
  • Working knowledge of high-performance computing (HPC) systems.

  • Ability to demonstrate strong levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to communicate at both a technical and non-technical level.
  • Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to work well as part of a team.
