Job Summary

The John Innes Centre is seeking a highly skilled Junior Systems Administrator to join its Research Computing Infrastructure team. As a key member of the team, you will be responsible for providing technical support and maintenance for the research computing infrastructure, ensuring that it is secure, reliable, and meets the needs of our researchers.

Main Responsibilities

  • Work with the Service Management and Infrastructure Groups to ensure user-facing services are maintained, secure, and fit for purpose.
  • Configure new Linux-based Virtual Machines for internal and end-user requirements.
  • Assist in the innovation and improvement of computing resources implemented by researchers.
  • Support the HPC engineer in maintaining the HPC (Slurm) systems at NBI.
  • Work with other members of the Service Management Group to ensure end-user requests are properly triaged and assist with day-to-day activities of Research Computing.

Requirements

  • IT/Computing BTEC HND/HNC level or equivalent.
  • Certificated courses in Linux, hardware, and networking.
  • Good knowledge of the Linux/UNIX command line and system administration.
  • Simple programming or scripting, preferably in a Linux/UNIX environment.
  • Working knowledge of high-performance computing (HPC) systems.

Desirable Skills

  • Working knowledge of database structures and query languages.
  • Working knowledge of OpenNebula.
  • Working knowledge of networked storage.
  • Ability to craft simple database queries.
  • Working knowledge of virtualization.
