Biodiversity and Conservation Manager

Job Overview

This role is pivotal in advancing The Crown Estate's strategic vision to bolster biodiversity and implement nature recovery initiatives, alongside carbon sequestration projects, across a vast rural estate encompassing 120,000 acres of agricultural land in England.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and propose innovative, ambitious, and feasible nature recovery initiatives that yield measurable outcomes and demonstrate cost-effectiveness, while overseeing their execution and successful realization;
  • Cultivate and sustain partnerships with farmers, neighboring communities, regulatory bodies, funding organizations, conservation entities, and other essential stakeholders to deliver exemplary and forward-thinking nature recovery projects;
  • Collaborate with farmers and managing agents to develop and implement practical conservation management strategies, focusing on habitat creation and enhancement;
  • Enhance existing environmental frameworks to create, refine, and execute tailored short-, medium-, and long-term environmental strategies for each estate;
  • Partner with colleagues to establish metrics, data collection, and monitoring systems to track activities and document outcomes;
  • Collaborate with rural, sustainability, and other internal teams to position The Crown Estate as a premier rural landowner with a proven record of successful nature recovery initiatives alongside a thriving sustainable food production system;
  • Work in tandem with Ecologists at various locations to exchange insights and knowledge.

Required Knowledge, Experience, and Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in conservation and habitat enhancement at both farm and landscape scales;
  • Extensive background in engaging with farmers and rural communities, with a solid understanding of agricultural practices and their environmental implications;
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external colleagues, stakeholders, and the public;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ecosystem services and natural capital assessment, measurement, and valuation;
  • Possession of at least one relevant industry-standard qualification (e.g., CIEEM);
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for building effective relationships;
  • Proven project management capabilities, with excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize and manage workloads;
  • Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences;
  • Proficient written communication skills, including report writing and the capacity to advocate for projects and initiatives;
  • Effective data management skills, ideally with experience in GIS;
  • Familiarity with grant funding or subsidy application processes;
  • Competence in budget formulation and business case development.
