Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Orthoptist with a strong focus on Neuro-Ophthalmology to lead and enhance our services within the healthcare framework. This role is pivotal in ensuring comprehensive patient assessments and tailored treatment plans.

Key Responsibilities

As an independent practitioner, you will hold full legal and professional accountability for evaluating patients and diagnosing conditions. You will develop and implement treatment strategies for a diverse range of orthoptic cases, catering to both inpatient and outpatient settings, including pediatric patients with special needs and adults recovering from strokes or spinal injuries.

The successful candidate will act as the Lead Orthoptist and clinical expert in Neuro-Ophthalmology, possessing extensive knowledge in conditions such as Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), recognized by the British and Irish Orthoptic Society (BIOS) as an advanced role following appropriate training.

  • You will manage complex medical cases that necessitate a profound understanding of neurological and medical issues, along with precise documentation of clinical observations.
  • You will be responsible for devising, executing, and overseeing individualized treatment protocols and care pathways for patients across all age groups, utilizing advanced clinical judgment and evidence-based methodologies to maximize patient outcomes.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & TRAINING

Essential Requirements

  • DBO, BSc (Hons) in Orthoptics, or BMed Sci in Orthoptics.
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • BIOS accredited postgraduate training in Visual Pathway Disorders.
  • Membership in the Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinical Advisory Group with demonstrated involvement.

EXPERIENCE

Essential Requirements

  • Comprehensive clinical experience in Orthoptics, particularly with pediatric and neurological cases.
  • Proficiency in assessing and treating patients with IIH.
  • Experience in clinical education and audit processes.
  • Capability to manage a complex workload independently.

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE

Essential Requirements

  • Competence in assessing, diagnosing, and treating a wide range of Orthoptic conditions.
  • Ability to manage personal workload effectively while providing supervision to junior staff.
  • Proficiency in conducting visual field assessments using advanced equipment.
  • In-depth knowledge of post-stroke conditions.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of conveying complex clinical information clearly to colleagues.
  • Ability to produce detailed clinical documentation.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

  • Normal visual acuity with corrective lenses as needed. Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Access to personal transportation for attending peripheral clinics, unless exempted by disability.
