Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced Orthoptist to lead our Neuro-Ophthalmology service in Buckinghamshire. The successful candidate will have a keen interest and experience in assessing patients with complex medical problems, and will be responsible for planning, implementing, and monitoring individual treatment plans and care pathways.

Main Duties

The post-holder will be an autonomous practitioner, responsible for patient assessment and diagnosis, and the formulation and conduction of treatment programmes for a full range of orthoptic cases. This will include inpatient and outpatient care, paediatrics, and adults with stroke and spinal injury patients.

The successful candidate will have highly specialist knowledge and experience in the areas of IIH, and will be able to manage complex cases effectively and influence ophthalmic management.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will have a DBO, BSc (hons) Orthoptics, or BMed Sci Orthoptics, and will be registered with the Health Professions Council. They will have evidence of Continued Professional Development, BIOS accredited postgraduate training in VPD, and membership of Neuro-Ophthalmology CAG.

They will also have undergraduate orthoptic clinical experience, excellent years of post-graduation experience in all aspects of clinical Orthoptics, and experience of clinical teaching, clinical audit, and assessment, treatment, and diagnosis of patients with IIH.

Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

The successful candidate will have the ability to assess, diagnose, and treat full range of Orthoptic cases, manage and take responsibility for own workload, and provide clinical supervision to junior members of staff. They will also have excellent communication skills, and the ability to write complex clinical reports.

Special Circumstances

The successful candidate will have normal visual acuity with both eyes open with glasses or contact lenses, good physical dexterity, and good hand-eye coordination. They will also be able to use their own car to attend peripheral clinics.
