Kingston upon Thames, Greater London, United Kingdom Achieving for Children Full time

Position Overview

Achieving for Children is a Community Interest Company that operates with a public sector ethos while embracing innovative approaches to service delivery. As a not-for-profit social enterprise, we are owned by three local authorities, allowing us to combine the benefits of local government employment with the flexibility of a social enterprise.

Role: SHIFT Guide (Social Worker)

Compensation: This position includes an annual market supplement of £3,000.

The Kingston and Richmond SHiFT Team is dedicated to disrupting the cycle of youth crime, enabling children to contribute positively to society and build fulfilling lives. Our approach focuses on working with children and young people who are at risk of engaging in criminal behavior, treating each individual with respect and understanding rather than defining them by their past actions.

A typical SHiFT team consists of five experienced Guides and one team coordinator, all working collaboratively to support the diverse needs of SHiFT participants. We prioritize a collective decision-making process, sharing responsibility for service delivery and leveraging each team member's expertise to enhance best practices.

This role offers the opportunity to influence the development of a new working model, requiring flexibility and a collaborative spirit. We seek experienced social workers from various backgrounds to contribute to the impactful work of SHiFT. This position is ideal for professionals eager to engage in meaningful, skilled interactions with children exhibiting challenging behaviors, necessitating a robust, relationship-based approach to address cycles of crime and harm.

In our SHiFT Practice, all Guides are qualified social workers, enabling them to perform essential statutory functions while fostering strong relationships with participants. We aim to dismantle barriers associated with traditional social care perceptions, facilitating transformative change for children involved in cycles of crime and their families.

Recognizing the overrepresentation of minority groups, particularly black males, in the youth justice system, we actively encourage applications from underrepresented communities to bring the necessary experience and insights to support children in breaking these harmful cycles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain supportive relationships with participants, guiding them through a tailored 18-month journey.
  • Work closely with a maximum of six children to ensure focused and effective interventions.
  • Collaborate with other professionals, including law enforcement and educational institutions, to provide comprehensive support services.
  • Conduct assessments and develop intervention plans based on individual needs and risks.

Qualifications:

  • A passionate social worker committed to reducing community harm and exploitation.
  • Ability to identify risks and formulate clear intervention strategies.
  • Experience in direct work with adolescents, fostering positive life choices and relationships.
  • Strong collaborative skills to work effectively with various stakeholders.

Benefits:

We are dedicated to fostering a supportive work environment, offering a competitive salary and a range of benefits, including:

  • 29 days of annual leave, increasing with tenure.
  • Local Government salary and pension scheme.
  • Flexible working arrangements to promote work-life balance.
  • Access to a comprehensive Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Opportunities for professional development and training.

Commitment to Equality:

We welcome applications from diverse backgrounds and are committed to promoting equality and inclusivity within our workforce. We value the contributions of individuals from various backgrounds and strive to create a culture that recognizes and celebrates diversity.

Safeguarding Commitment:

We are dedicated to safeguarding the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. All staff members are expected to share this commitment.
