Kingston upon Thames, Greater London, United Kingdom Achieving for Children Full time

Position Overview

Achieving for Children is a Community Interest Company that embodies a public sector ethos while embracing innovative approaches to service delivery. As a not-for-profit social enterprise owned by three local authorities, we combine the freedoms of a social enterprise with the employment benefits typical of local government.

Role of the Youth Engagement Specialist

Competitive annual market supplement available

The Kingston and Richmond SHiFT Team is dedicated to disrupting the harmful cycles of youth crime, empowering children to contribute positively to society and build fulfilling lives.

SHiFT engages with children and adolescents who are either involved in or at risk of engaging in criminal activities. We focus on individual needs rather than defining them by their past actions.

A typical SHiFT team consists of five skilled Youth Engagement Specialists and one team coordinator, all working collaboratively to support various aspects of SHiFT initiatives.

Our approach is characterized by tenacity, collaboration, and systemic thinking, working closely with SHiFT participants and their support networks. Each Youth Engagement Specialist takes on a leadership role within the team, emphasizing collective decision-making and shared responsibility for effective service delivery.

As a member of the SHiFT team, you will play a crucial role in shaping and developing this innovative approach. Your experience and insights will be invaluable in maximizing the impact of our initiatives. Flexibility and collaboration are essential, as we seek to share ideas and take calculated risks to transform the lives of our participants.

We are looking for seasoned social workers from diverse backgrounds to contribute to the growth and implementation of SHiFT during this pivotal phase. This role is particularly suited for practitioners eager to engage in meaningful, skilled interactions with children exhibiting challenging behaviors, requiring a robust and relationship-centered approach to disrupt cycles of crime and harm.

In Kingston and Richmond's SHIFT Practice, our Specialists are all qualified social workers, enabling them to foster relationships with participants while also fulfilling essential statutory responsibilities, such as assessments and planning within social care. We strive to dismantle barriers of hierarchy and preconceived notions about social care to facilitate significant change for children entangled in cycles of crime and their families.

The youth justice system in the UK shows a disproportionate representation of children and young people from minority groups, particularly black males. Therefore, we actively encourage applications from underrepresented groups to bring the necessary experience, skills, and knowledge to support these young individuals in breaking free from destructive cycles leading to criminal behavior.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with participants, guiding them through their SHiFT journey over an 18-month period.
  • Facilitate the development of essential skills, including literacy, numeracy, and communication, to empower participants for a brighter future.
  • Manage a caseload of no more than six children to ensure focused and effective support.
  • Collaborate with other professionals, including law enforcement, educational institutions, and health services, to provide comprehensive support to vulnerable youth.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • A passionate social worker dedicated to working with young people to mitigate exploitation and harm.
  • Recognizes adolescence as a critical period for influencing positive self-identity and life choices.
  • Skilled in risk assessment and intervention planning based on comprehensive information analysis.
  • Experienced in direct engagement with adolescents to help them identify and pursue positive life goals.
  • Collaborative in working with various professionals to ensure the best services are provided to vulnerable youth.

Benefits

We prioritize creating a supportive work environment, offering a wide range of resources, competitive salaries, and perks that facilitate hybrid working. Employees will have access to:

  • Generous annual leave, increasing with tenure.
  • Tailored induction programs upon starting.
  • Local Government salary and pension schemes.
  • Flexible working arrangements to promote work-life balance.
  • Comprehensive Employee Assistance Programs.
  • A variety of staff benefits and discounts.
  • Extensive learning and development opportunities to support career advancement.

Commitment to Equality and Safeguarding

We are dedicated to promoting equality and diversity within our workforce, welcoming applications from all community sections. We are a Disability Confident employer and committed to safeguarding the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults. All staff and volunteers are expected to share this commitment.
