Kingston upon Thames, Greater London, United Kingdom Achieving for Children Full time

Position Overview

Achieving for Children is a Community Interest Company dedicated to fostering innovative solutions within the public sector framework. As a not-for-profit social enterprise, we are committed to enhancing the lives of children and families through our unique approach.

Role: Adolescent Intervention Guide

Annual Market Supplement: £3,000

The Kingston and Richmond SHiFT Team is focused on disrupting the cycle of youth crime, empowering young individuals to contribute positively to society and build fulfilling lives.

SHiFT engages with children and adolescents who are at risk of, or involved in, criminal activities. Our philosophy is to view each participant as an individual, not defined by their past actions.

A typical SHiFT team consists of five skilled Intervention Guides and a team coordinator, all working collaboratively to support participants through tailored, flexible interactions. While one Guide may take the lead, our approach is non-hierarchical, emphasizing collective decision-making and shared responsibility for effective outcomes.

This innovative working model is still evolving, and your expertise will be crucial in shaping its future. We seek professionals who are adaptable and willing to collaborate, sharing insights and taking calculated risks to transform the lives of those we serve.

We invite applications from seasoned social workers across diverse backgrounds to help us advance the SHiFT initiative during this pivotal phase. This role is ideal for practitioners eager to engage in meaningful, skilled work with children facing significant challenges, requiring a robust, relationship-focused approach to mitigate cycles of crime and harm.

In our SHiFT Practice, all Guides are qualified social workers, enabling them to build relationships with participants while fulfilling essential social care responsibilities, including assessments and planning. We strive to dismantle barriers and reshape perceptions of social care to foster meaningful change for children entangled in cycles of crime and their families.

It is crucial to acknowledge that within the UK youth justice system, minority groups, particularly black males, are disproportionately represented. We actively encourage applications from underrepresented communities to bring the necessary experience and insight to support these young individuals in breaking harmful cycles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish and maintain a strong, supportive relationship with participants over an 18-month period.
  • Work with a maximum of six children to ensure focused and effective engagement.
  • Receive and assess referrals from various sources based on SHiFT intervention criteria.
  • Utilize social work expertise, including conducting investigations and managing child protection cases.

Candidate Profile:

  • A passionate social worker dedicated to reducing community harm and exploitation.
  • Recognizes adolescence as a critical period for fostering positive self-identity and decision-making.
  • Skilled in risk assessment and intervention planning based on comprehensive information analysis.
  • Experienced in direct engagement with adolescents to help them set and achieve positive life goals.
  • Collaborative with other professionals, including law enforcement and educational institutions, to provide holistic support.

Benefits:

We prioritize creating a supportive work environment with access to extensive resources, competitive salaries, and flexible working arrangements. Our benefits include:

  • 29 days of annual leave, increasing with tenure.
  • Comprehensive induction and training programs.
  • Local Government pension scheme.
  • Flexible working options to maintain work-life balance.
  • Employee Assistance Programme and various staff discounts.
  • Robust learning and development opportunities.

Commitment to Equality:

We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace and encourage applications from diverse backgrounds. Our recruitment practices aim to promote equality and diversity, recognizing the value of varied perspectives in enhancing service delivery.

Safeguarding Commitment:

We are committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and vulnerable adults. All staff are expected to share this commitment, and this position is subject to a satisfactory DBS check.
