London, Greater London, United Kingdom The National Archives Full time

Position Overview

The Document Services Department (DSD) plays a crucial role in managing the extensive collection of The National Archives, which encompasses over 17 million documents and continues to grow annually. DSD is responsible for the storage, production, replacement, supervision, and duplication of these invaluable records.

As a Reader Support Specialist, you will facilitate physical access to the archives through a reader registration process. Annually, approximately 600,000 documents are made available to the public, primarily in our reading rooms. You will serve as the initial point of contact for users, providing guidance on visiting procedures and assisting with access to our collection both in person and remotely through various communication channels.

We seek an individual with exceptional verbal and written communication skills, coupled with a strong commitment to customer service. You will be part of a dedicated team in a dynamic environment, where maintaining composure under pressure is essential. Your role will involve acting as a representative of The National Archives, warmly welcoming visitors and users of our services.

Join us in a vibrant setting, where you can expect a comprehensive benefits package, including a pension scheme and discounts with local businesses. We also prioritize employee wellbeing, offering resources such as on-site therapists, a gym, a restaurant, a shop, and a staff bar.

This is a full-time position, with flexibility for part-time arrangements, job sharing, and remote work options, subject to departmental needs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist users in navigating the archives and accessing documents.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and support to all visitors.
  • Maintain a calm and professional demeanor in a busy environment.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members to enhance service delivery.
  • Utilize IT skills to manage document requests and communications.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Demonstrated flexibility and a positive attitude towards change.
  • Proven experience in customer service, ideally within a team setting.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and take initiative when necessary.
  • Competence in meeting deadlines with accuracy.
  • Capability to remain composed during high-pressure situations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in similar organizations.

Benefits

In addition to a competitive salary, The National Archives offers a generous benefits package, including contributions to a pension scheme, access to sports and social club facilities, discounted rates at our on-site café, and opportunities for professional development.
