Position Overview

The Cabinet Office is seeking individuals with extensive expertise in conducting, facilitating, and ensuring the quality of comprehensive, structured analysis. Candidates should be dedicated to enhancing analytical standards within the intelligence analysis field and possess the capability to collaborate effectively in leading and executing significant cross-agency initiatives.

The role of the Senior Analytical Tradecraft Officer involves providing guidance, support, and constructive challenge to intelligence analysts who are engaged in evaluating intricate national security matters. As part of the team assisting the Professional Head of Intelligence Assessment (PHIA) within the Cabinet Office, the successful applicant will play a pivotal role in advancing and implementing analytical tradecraft across all-source intelligence evaluations.

Role Responsibilities

The Cabinet Office primarily aids key decision-makers, including the National Security Council (NSC) and the Prime Minister, by delivering authoritative and robust all-source intelligence assessments on a wide array of national security and foreign policy issues.

Our focus extends beyond conventional national security topics, encompassing emerging technologies, economic and health security, climate change, and horizon scanning, which involves identifying and monitoring nations at risk of instability.

The Professional Head of Intelligence Assessment (PHIA) oversees the Intelligence Analysis Profession across government, fostering coherence, collaboration, and capability development. PHIA is supported by a team within the Cabinet Office that addresses analytical tradecraft standards, community collaboration, and career pathways for analysts.

The successful candidate will be recognized as a subject matter expert in analytical tradecraft within the Cabinet Office. Daily responsibilities will include advising and supporting analysts in overcoming complex analytical challenges throughout the intelligence assessment lifecycle.

Key duties will involve:

  • Advising analysts on designing analytical workshops, including selecting suitable analytical techniques and methodologies.
  • Facilitating analytical workshops for the Cabinet Office and, when necessary, for other government entities.
  • Leading community projects and initiatives aligned with the objectives of the PHIA-led analytical tradecraft group.
  • Consulting on analytical practices, methods, and approaches for the Cabinet Office and other assessment bodies.
  • Contributing to the review processes for the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) and other intelligence assessment organizations.
  • Managing the development of analytical tradecraft tools, techniques, and guidance for the intelligence assessment community.
  • Supporting the enhancement and quality assurance of training programs for analysts by collaborating with the Intelligence Assessment Academy development team.

There may also be opportunities to instruct on certain tradecraft elements within the Assessment Academy's courses.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience in all-source intelligence analysis or a clear demonstration of transferable analytical expertise.
  • Proficiency in selecting and applying various analytical tools and techniques to both quantitative and qualitative datasets.
  • Exceptional communication and networking abilities, particularly in engaging with senior personnel.
  • Strong organizational skills to effectively manage multiple competing priorities.
  • Robust facilitation skills.

  • Developing analytical tools, techniques, and methodologies.

  • Managing cross-departmental projects.

Additional Information
