Position Overview

This opportunity is open to both external and internal applicants.

The role is situated within the Mental Health division of Black Country Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. As the largest clinical division within the organization, the Mental Health Division encompasses community services, urgent care, specialist services, and Physical Health Psychology, alongside Talking Therapies.

Our community services are evolving in accordance with the NHS Long Term Plan, and you will be joining us at a pivotal moment as our new Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs) are being established. This presents a unique opportunity to shape the development and delivery of psychological services within the North team as it progresses through its formative stages.

The successful candidates will integrate into a locally based team comprised of clinical and counselling psychologists, psychotherapists, and intervention practitioners.

Post holders will receive support and accountability from the team/service manager and will benefit from professional guidance by a consultant psychologist.

The ideal candidate should be eager to apply their expertise in a fresh environment and demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in their psychological practice. Strong teamwork skills and the ability to accommodate various professional frameworks are essential. The post holder will be responsible for developing complex psychological formulations, providing supervision, consultancy, and training, and leading initiatives to enhance the understanding of psychological approaches to mental health recovery.

Main Responsibilities

This position primarily offers an exciting opportunity to cultivate and implement the competencies necessary for effective medium- and long-term psychological therapy, whether in individual or group settings.

The successful applicant will join the local Community and Recovery Service and will also be part of a trust-wide team of clinical and counselling psychologists, psychotherapists, and intervention practitioners. The post holder will be supported and accountable to a clinical lead and team manager, with professional support from a consultant psychologist.

Job Responsibilities

Purpose of the Role

Accountable for delivering specialist psychological care to clients with complex mental health conditions, including those exhibiting challenging behaviors.

To demonstrate compassion in addressing the needs of clients, their caregivers, and families.

To consistently promote a positive image of individuals experiencing mental health challenges.

To maintain a positive representation of the service and the broader Trust.

In accordance with the role's banding and service context, responsibilities include:

  • Exercising supervisory and professional responsibility for other psychological therapists.
  • Providing leadership in multidisciplinary training and development.
  • Leading service audits and development initiatives.
  • Contributing to service evaluation and research.
  • Ensuring a psychological perspective is integrated into service redesign and cultural transformation.

Clinical Responsibilities and Patient Interaction

Conducting specialized psychological assessments for clients with complex conditions, utilizing appropriate data interpretation and integration from diverse sources, including neuropsychological testing.

Recognizing potential signs of client harm, abuse, or neglect, and taking necessary actions to protect clients while reporting concerns regarding safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

Performing risk assessments and management for individual clients, providing expert advice to other professionals on psychological aspects of risk.

Formulating treatment plans for specialized psychological therapy based on an appropriate conceptual framework and evidence-based practices, negotiating implementation with clients and their caregivers.

Implementing a variety of specialized psychological therapies for individuals, caregivers, families, and groups, adjusting formulations as necessary.

Evaluating treatment options and making informed decisions regarding therapy.

Collaborating with other professionals within the NHS, social inclusion, and the voluntary sector on matters impacting client care.

Supervisory and Professional Responsibilities

Providing clinical supervision to assistant psychologists under the guidance of a consultant psychologist.

Maintaining accountability for personal actions, ensuring appropriate support and supervision are sought when necessary.

Staying informed about current developments in the field through reading, attending relevant training courses, and engaging in various CPD activities, maintaining a log in accordance with Psychology and Counselling service and HCPC requirements.

Participating in regular line management, caseload supervision, and clinical supervision, along with annual appraisals and reviews as needed.

Multi-Disciplinary Training and Development

Providing psychological advice, guidance, and consultation to other direct care staff within the multidisciplinary team.

Offering clinical supervision to other direct care staff within the multidisciplinary team.

Delivering training to other staff within the multidisciplinary team under the guidance of senior psychologists.

Service and Organizational Development

Engaging in CQUIN and QIP projects, NICE benchmarking, and compliance requirements as necessary within the multidisciplinary team.

Service Redesign and Cultural Change

Applying an understanding of psychological change processes to the role within the multidisciplinary team.

Service Evaluation and Research

Participating in clinical audits as required within the multidisciplinary team.

Conducting service evaluations and research within the multidisciplinary team.

Undertaking additional duties of a similar nature consistent with the responsibilities of this position to ensure quality service delivery.

Essential and Desirable Qualifications

Essential

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in Applied Psychology (or equivalent) accredited by the BPS, including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, multiple psychological therapies, and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • HCPC registration as an Applied Psychologist.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Experience working with mental health clients.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices relevant to the role.
  • Experience in risk assessment and management.
  • Understanding of clinical governance.
  • Familiarity with legislation pertaining to the client group (Adults) and mental health.
  • Knowledge of audit and research methodologies.
  • Awareness of the Social Inclusion agenda.
  • Understanding of the Trust's Quality Improvement System.
  • Ability to communicate complex and sensitive information effectively to a diverse audience.
  • Capability to creatively adapt the evidence base for interventions relevant to adult clients.
  • Proficiency in providing effective teaching, training, consultancy, and clinical support within agreed timelines.
  • Experience in leading multidisciplinary team efforts and responsibilities.
  • Ability to engage in complex multi-agency collaboration and liaise with various systems.
  • Competence in utilizing psychometric tests.
  • Ability to identify and promote appropriate interventions for caregivers and staff facing distressing situations and challenging behaviors.
