About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our dynamic community mental health team in South Westminster. As a Peer Support Specialist, you will play a vital role in supporting individuals with complex mental health needs in community settings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to deliver support to individuals accessing our community service.
  • Assume a coaching role, supporting service users in developing personal recovery plans, which can be delivered individually or in groups.
  • Assist service users in identifying their strengths, personal interests, and goals.
  • Provide opportunities for service users to direct their own recovery process.
  • Facilitate the individual's movement through and beyond the community service.
  • Model and mentor a recovery process, demonstrating coping skills and using your own experience of recovery.
  • Act as a role model to service users, inspiring hope, sharing life experiences, and lessons learned as a person in recovery.
  • Support service users in negotiating an Advanced Directive with all parties involved in their care.
  • Contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation, and review of care with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Work with service users and their carers to draw up care plans, encouraging and motivating service users to take an active role in their own care plan.
  • Assist individuals in managing their mental health on a day-to-day basis, including providing support with activities of daily living.
  • Positively promote and support independent living for service users in the community by maintaining knowledge of community resources and supporting service users to access them.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of educational and peer-facilitated support groups and activities that complement the team plan.
  • Accompany service users to appointments, therapeutic, or social community-based activities as appropriate.
  • Support service users in reconnecting with family, friends, and significant others, and learning how to improve or eliminate unhealthy relationships.
  • Assist service users in maintaining a connection with their life outside of services.
  • Accept and respect service users' personal beliefs, uniqueness, and identity.
Person Specification

We are looking for an individual with the following skills and experience:

  • Commitment to obtaining underpinning knowledge through work-based learning and mandatory training.
  • Ability to demonstrate understanding of intentional Peer Support.
  • Ability to demonstrate first-person experiential knowledge of personal recovery.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of personal recovery as it may relate to others.
  • Evidence of good interpersonal skills and an ability to form peer relationships with service users and carers.
  • Effective listening skills.
  • Ability to communicate on all levels and to a broad scope of individuals, both internally and externally to the Trust.
  • Ability to consult and deliver training to other teams as appropriate.
