The Associated Press is in search of a skilled and adaptable text editor to enhance its global editing team. Operating from a central location and reporting to the deputy director for global text, you will engage with a diverse array of stories, ranging from urgent news to in-depth features, as part of a text production team that disseminates stories worldwide. Collaboration with news managers and journalists globally will be key to ensuring that AP content is precise, timely, distinctive, and creatively presented for audiences everywhere.

Key Responsibilities: In this capacity, you will ensure that breaking news is published promptly, effectively guiding accurate reporting to AP members and clients. You will swiftly evaluate the essence of a story, pinpointing areas that require elaboration or gaps that need addressing, working to enhance the reporting and writing so that it resonates with all of AP's audiences. As a cooperative team member, you will cover a variety of topics and collaborate with reporters globally, and may occasionally be called upon to report breaking news from the desk. Additionally, you may be tasked with sourcing and verifying significant user-generated content, crafting engaging social media promotions, and utilizing digital tools to present stories in innovative ways.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Collaborate with a team of journalists, reporters, and editors to deliver impactful spot news and enterprise coverage that is exclusive to AP.
  • Exhibit strong communication skills and work cohesively with a diverse team of journalists at AP who operate across all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive, and graphics.
  • Possess a keen news sense, with the ability to convey stories that are shareable on social media and other platforms.
  • Pursue innovative and inclusive coverage while upholding AP's standards for integrity and objectivity.

Preferred Qualifications: We seek an exceptional text editor who is passionate about guiding both spot news and enterprise stories to publication, and who enjoys assisting reporters in articulating complex narratives in clear and engaging ways. You should be capable of supporting reporters throughout the reporting, writing, and presentation processes, including collaboration with colleagues in remote locations. You thrive in fast-paced environments and can quickly adjust priorities as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, such as at least one year of full-time work at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
  • All applicants must have the ability to work in the UK or obtain the necessary permissions.
  • Advanced-level professional proficiency in written and spoken English. Proficiency in an additional language is advantageous.
  • The willingness and ability to work any shift, including nights and weekends, as AP operates 24/7.
