Colorectal Imaging Nurse Coordinator

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust Full time

Position Overview

The successful candidate will collaborate with the referring and Gastrointestinal Radiology teams to oversee the pre-assessment and management of care for patients referred for colorectal imaging procedures. This role serves as the primary clinical liaison for patients from the moment of referral until the imaging procedure is completed. The coordinator will manage the service, engaging with the patient, referring physician, and radiology team regarding specific patient needs related to bowel preparation and appointment attendance.

Key Responsibilities

The GI Cancer Services Improvement Team has identified that patients urgently referred for suspected gastrointestinal cancer often face delays in their care pathway due to the intricate requirements associated with diagnostic evaluations. These challenges primarily involve the necessity for patients to complete bowel preparation at home prior to their imaging procedure, as well as ensuring timely attendance under the established cancer referral pathways. This position is designed to assist patients in navigating the complexities associated with these tests and to facilitate their care coordination prior to their hospital visit.

Core Duties

  1. Oversee the effective management of care for patients referred for colorectal imaging, from the initial referral through to the completion of their diagnostic evaluation.
  2. Possess a comprehensive understanding of the procedures for which patients are being referred and be well-versed in the patient information materials related to bowel preparation.
  3. Distribute the appropriate bowel preparation materials to patients in accordance with established protocols, following a thorough assessment of patient risks.
  4. Conduct pre-assessments for all patients referred for colorectal imaging to ensure:
  • Patients fully comprehend the reasons for their referral.
  • Patients are aware of the timeline associated with their referral pathway and have confirmed their appointment details.
  • Patients know the location of their imaging appointment and have arranged transportation.
  • Patients understand the procedure and its requirements.
  • Patients have received and comprehend the bowel preparation instructions.
  • All patient inquiries and concerns regarding the procedure are addressed.
Communicate effectively with the Colorectal Straight to Test team or Radiology staff if any patient concerns arise that require escalation. Provide feedback on service delivery standards. Engage in effective communication with all members of the multidisciplinary team. Respond to clinical incidents as necessary and compile incident reports when appropriate. Ensure adherence to best practices and relevant guidelines concerning patient pathways. Encourage patient involvement in decision-making and facilitate informed choices regarding appointments. Create an environment that supports high-quality care, both physically and psychologically. Coordinate with health advocacy services to arrange support as needed for patients. Recognize and respect the diverse cultural and spiritual needs of patients.

Radiology-Specific Responsibilities

  1. Complete an in-house IRMER training course.
  2. Maintain a clear understanding of radiation doses associated with imaging procedures and comply with IRMER regulations.
  3. Verify patient status regarding pregnancy during pre-assessment and provide guidance on necessary precautions.
