Position Overview

Paediatric Clinical Observership - 4 Week Program

A Clinical Observership offers internationally trained medical professionals an insightful experience into the operational frameworks and methodologies of the NHS, equipping them with the necessary skills to integrate into the UK healthcare system.

Participants will be paired with a Clinical Supervisor and will have the opportunity to shadow a diverse healthcare team, gaining exposure to clinical practices, enhancing interpersonal abilities, and acquiring a variety of essential competencies. Each participant will undergo a comprehensive induction and engage in collaborative educational sessions facilitated by the Medical Education department. The Clinical Supervisor will conduct regular assessments to gauge the participant's understanding and will complete the Clinical Observership Record. Upon successful completion, a Certificate of Clinical Observership will be awarded.

There is a fee associated with the 4-week observership program, which covers administrative processing and supervision costs. This fee is applicable only to selected candidates who accept the offer, and it is non-refundable should the candidate choose to withdraw.

Key Responsibilities

By the conclusion of the 4-week observership, participants are expected to have developed the following clinical competencies:

  • Proficient history-taking and examination techniques
  • Effective case presentation skills
  • Sound prescribing practices
  • Infection control protocols
  • Interpretation of laboratory results
  • ECG analysis
  • X-ray interpretation
  • Conducting investigations
  • Formulating differential diagnoses
  • Making informed treatment decisions
  • Fostering doctor-patient partnerships
  • Understanding consent processes
  • End-of-life care considerations

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for this observership, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Medical qualification from an overseas institution
  • A minimum of 12 months post-qualification experience
  • Completion of Part 1 of the PLAB examination
  • Successful completion of PLAB Part 2
  • For non-native English speakers, an IELTS or OET certificate demonstrating proficiency is required

All candidates must undergo pre-engagement checks in accordance with NHS standards. Inadequate checks may result in the withdrawal of the observership offer.
