Position Overview
Paediatric Clinical Observership - 4 Week Program
A Clinical Observership offers internationally trained medical professionals an insightful experience into the workings of the NHS, equipping them with essential knowledge and skills for future practice.
Participants will be paired with a Clinical Supervisor and will have the opportunity to shadow a diverse healthcare team. This experience will enable them to observe clinical practices, enhance their interpersonal abilities, and acquire a variety of additional competencies. Each participant will undergo a comprehensive induction and engage in group educational sessions organized by the Medical Education department. The Clinical Supervisor will conduct regular assessments to evaluate the participant's understanding and complete the Clinical Observership Record. Upon successful completion, a Certificate of Clinical Observership will be awarded.
There is a fee associated with the 4-week observership program, which covers administrative processing and supervision costs. This fee applies only to selected candidates who accept the placement offer and is non-refundable in the event of withdrawal.
Key Responsibilities
By the conclusion of the 4-week observership, participants are expected to have developed the following clinical competencies:
- History taking and examination skills
- Case presentation techniques
- Effective prescribing practices
- Infection control protocols
- Blood result interpretation
- ECG analysis
- X-ray interpretation
- Conducting investigations
- Differential diagnosis formulation
- Treatment decision-making
- Doctor-patient relationship management
- Informed consent processes
- End-of-life care considerations
Candidate Requirements
To be eligible for this observership, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Medical qualification as an overseas doctor
- A minimum of 12 months post-qualification experience
- Completion of Part 1 of the PLAB test
- Successful completion of PLAB Part 2
- For non-native English speakers, an IELTS or OET certificate at the required level or equivalent proof of English proficiency is necessary
All candidates must undergo pre-engagement checks in accordance with NHS standards. Inadequate checks may result in the withdrawal of the observership offer.
