Senior Market Risk Leader - Renewable Energy SectorGlobal Commodity Trading Firm, London, United Kingdom

Overview: A prominent global trading firm specializing in physical commodities is seeking an experienced Market Risk Leader to spearhead and expand the Risk division for its London operations. This role involves close collaboration with the Head of Market Risk, Chief Risk Officer, and the Head of Trading within the renewable energy sector.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate directly with the Head of Trading across proprietary and algorithmic trading desks, providing assistance with risk management, hedging strategies, and various inquiries related to the renewable energy business.
  • Perform comprehensive quantitative assessments across risk and credit functions, ensuring that models and portfolios are functioning optimally.
  • Assist the Market Risk team in the validation and enhancement of risk models, including system testing and optimization efforts.
  • Support the Head of Market Risk and the Chief Risk Officer in managing and guiding the Market Risk team in London, establishing direction and operational standards to ensure a unified global approach.
  • Enhance and optimize internal systems while developing quantitative and reporting tools utilized by the Credit department, Market Risk, Finance, and Front Office teams.
  • Utilize a quantitative methodology to assist the risk control team in its practices, including limits (notional and vega), Value-at-Risk backtesting, and underlying assumptions.
  • Prepare analyses as requested by the team leader for review by the Risk Committee and/or New Business Committee.
  • Contribute to the design and execution of a comprehensive risk control framework with an emphasis on market risk.
  • Foster a risk-aware culture and advocate for best practice controls within the organization through collaboration with commercial and control teams across various regions.

Qualifications:

  • A degree in Quantitative Finance, Mathematics, Physics, or related scientific disciplines.
  • Over 8 years of experience in a similar role within a commodity trading environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with counterparts, senior management, and both internal and external regulators.
  • Proficient understanding of Value-at-Risk, scenario analysis, backtesting, and other market risk methodologies.
  • In-depth knowledge of renewable energy markets, including Wind, Solar, Geothermal, Electricity, Power Purchase Agreements, Photovoltaics, and Battery technologies.
  • Familiarity with market risks associated with traded and real option portfolios.
  • Experience in both physical and financial energy markets.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply risk management principles, including stress-testing, liquidity-adjusted VaR, and scenario analysis.
