Position Overview

This is a full-time role suitable for individuals who are either on the specialist register or are working towards achieving registration in the field of Plastic Surgery.

The Plastic Surgery Department operates within the Specialised Surgery Directorate, which is part of the Surgical Division. This Directorate manages a substantial budget and employs a significant number of personnel.

The strategic focus for Plastic Surgery is to enhance and expand our Acute Plastic service. The core components of our Acute Plastic Surgery service include:

  • Management of Skin Cancer
  • Orthoplastic Trauma Care
  • Head and Neck Cancer Treatment
  • Reconstructive Surgery (Breast)

This position aims to bolster our Skin and Trauma services through the recruitment of a Locum Plastic Surgery Consultant, thereby strengthening our team of Plastic Consultants.

Key Responsibilities

  • The selected candidate will conduct joint sessions at multiple hospital locations.
  • The primary hospital provides regional plastic surgery services and is recognized as a Major Trauma Centre.
  • There are dedicated inpatient wards and a Surgical Daycase and Admissions Unit located nearby. The department is also adjacent to a Treatment Suite that accommodates burns and dressings clinics.
  • The successful candidate will be integrated into a specialized Skin Multidisciplinary Team (MDT).
  • The department participates in various clinical trials focused on skin cancer patients at both regional and national levels.
  • As a designated major trauma centre, we are expanding our Orthoplastic trauma services.
  • Job plans may be subject to modification upon appointment, and flexibility is essential.
  • The surgeon will engage in outpatient consultations prior to surgical procedures and will be involved in all aspects of patient operative care.
  • The successful candidate will participate in an on-call rota for inpatient care and emergency referrals, with an expectation to return to the hospital if necessary.

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • GMC registration with entry on the Specialist Register or nearing completion of CCT at the time of interview.
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • FRCS in Plastic Surgery or an equivalent qualification with entry on the Specialist Register.

Desirable Criteria

  • Possession of an advanced degree (PhD, Masters).
  • Fellowship in Breast Microvascular Surgery.
  • Fellowship in Hand Surgery.

Management and Administrative Skills

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience and understanding of Clinical Audit processes.
  • Interest in or progress towards a Business degree.

Clinical Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Experience working within a Specialized Breast MDT.
  • Demonstrated experience in microvascular surgery.
