Position Overview

Lead Trauma Education Specialist in Orthopaedics

Fixed-term role

This position, while not formally recognized for training, offers the opportunity to join a dedicated team of medical professionals and gain equal access to educational resources.

You will engage actively in the educational initiatives of the Directorate and enhance your expertise across a comprehensive spectrum of trauma and orthopaedic services, including trauma and elective surgical procedures, fracture management, and inpatient care.

Primary Responsibilities

Key Duties/Tasks

  • Conduct thorough assessments, diagnoses, and management of all patients admitted to the Trauma & Orthopaedics department.
  • Oversee the care of patients in both trauma and elective wards, as well as any additional wards as necessary.
  • Participate in outpatient services, elective procedures, and fracture management clinics.
  • Engage in both trauma and elective surgical operations.
  • Facilitate referrals of patients to other medical specialties as required.
  • Perform essential investigations, including blood sampling for cross-matching and emergency imaging.
  • Ensure appropriate patient transfers, which may include:
    • Admission to inpatient care facilities
    • Discharge with appropriate follow-up at the hospital
    • Discharge to a General Practitioner
    • Discharge with no follow-up required

Job Responsibilities

Candidate Profile

Qualifications

Essential

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree
  • MRCS/FRCS or equivalent surgical qualification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)
  • Completion of an AO course or equivalent training

Desirable

  • Recognition or awards during undergraduate studies
  • Notable academic and extracurricular accomplishments

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • A minimum of 24 months of basic surgical training (non-UK candidates must demonstrate equivalent training with appropriate supervision and assessment)
  • At least 6 months of experience in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery at a Middle Grade level or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 6 months of experience in a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.

Desirable

  • Experience in a substantive post for at least 3 months in Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Intensive Care, or Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • 18 months of experience in Trauma & Orthopaedic surgery at a Middle Grade level or equivalent
