Role Overview
In collaboration with both local and central teams, this position is responsible for ensuring the compliance of the logistics fleet and drivers with legal standards. The role involves strategic planning of the fleet to align with business requirements, managing supplier performance within the Engineering team, and maintaining cost efficiency while delivering top-tier compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure adherence to all legal obligations and policies related to fleet and drivers, including maintaining compliance with Operators Licences.
  • Engage with the Logistics UK Association to position Sainsbury's as a leader in the industry, ensuring compliance with EU regulations and the Working Time Directive, while meeting or exceeding DVSA KPIs.
  • Strategically plan fleet allocation in accordance with depot budgets to ensure optimal fleet availability during peak operations.
  • Maintain the company’s operator's licence and assess third-party operator licences, collaborating with external fleet and transport departments to mitigate compliance risks.
  • Enhance performance by effectively coaching depot transport and fleet teams, ensuring compliance with company policies and legal requirements.
  • Drive performance excellence in service and cost management across the Engineering teams' fleet operations, ensuring KPIs are consistently met.
  • Develop and promote a standardized compliance reporting process for all engineering compliance areas.
  • Prepare the annual revenue budget for the vehicle fleet and manage fleet replacement orders in alignment with budgetary constraints.
  • Implement a national standard for tachograph analysis and Road Transport Directive reporting across all logistics depots.
  • Utilize industry benchmarking to elevate current performance standards.
  • Collaborate with Transport Compliance leads and Regional Transport Managers to identify and standardize best practices across the organization.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key personnel in Sainsbury's depots, regional and central teams, and the supplier network.
  • Act as the primary contact for all Group Insurance coordination.
  • Continuously explore, develop, and implement new processes for effective management of HGV & MHE assets and compliance, aiming to reduce costs and enhance compliance.
  • Oversee and uphold Earned Recognition and Truck Excellence standards.
  • Facilitate effective communication and colleague engagement processes.
  • Promote a positive health and safety culture on-site, ensuring safe working practices.
  • Collaborate with group insurance to minimize accident-related costs.
  • Manage a significant Christmas hire budget.
Qualifications and Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of Road Transport Legislation.
  • Possession of a Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage.
  • Systematic problem-solving skills with the ability to produce accurate reports.
  • Experience managing costs within budgetary limits.
  • Background in a central team at a management level.
  • Familiarity with compliance and asset management systems, including databases and compliance tracking tools.
  • Capability to develop database solutions for asset management tracking.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills across various teams.
  • Proficient negotiation skills with the ability to influence outcomes.
  • Adept at identifying and implementing solutions to new challenges within existing frameworks.
  • Flexible in approach to achieve results and gain commitment from diverse teams.
Decision-Making Authority
  • Authorized to sign legal documents related to operators licensing and DVLA documentation.
  • Accountable for compliance contracts.
  • Responsible for the procurement and specification of transport assets.
  • Authority to address disciplinary matters and grievances in accordance with site agreements.
  • Responsible for purchasing driver's hours management systems.
  • Revenue sign-off authority up to £5,000.
