Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Clinical Psychologist or Cognitive Analytic Therapist to join our team in providing specialist psychological services to individuals with complex emotional needs associated with personality disorder. The successful candidate will work closely with our multidisciplinary team to deliver evidence-based interventions and provide consultation and training to colleagues.

Main Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive psychological assessments of clients referred to the team, including personality disorder pathway, using a range of assessment tools and techniques.
  • Formulate and implement plans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of clients' mental health problems, based on an appropriate conceptual framework and evidence-based interventions.
  • Provide specialist psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families, and groups, including CAT and other evidence-based therapies.
  • Evaluate and make decisions about treatment options, taking into account complex factors concerning historical and developmental processes that have shaped the individual, family, or group.
  • Exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, treatment, and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.
  • Provide specialist psychological advice, guidance, and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients' formulation, diagnosis, and treatment plan.
  • Contribute directly and indirectly to a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefit of all clients of the service, across all settings and agencies serving the client group.
  • Undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and provide advice to other professions on psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management.
  • Act as care coordinator, where appropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of care plans under enhanced CPA, including clients, their carers, referring agents, and others involved in the network of care.
  • Communicate in a skilled and sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation, and treatment plans of clients under their care and monitor progress during the course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary care.
  • Deliver and co-deliver brief interventions for people with personality disorder.
  • Provide time-limited case management for a caseload of service users.
  • Provide liaison to inpatient wards to consult on the management of people with personality disorders, as and when indicated.
  • Provide consultation to GPs in the management of people with personality disorders, as and when indicated.
  • Be involved in co-delivering structured group-based treatments, MBT or DBT groups, as indicated.
  • Be aware of and embed principles of the trauma-informed approach within the pathway.
Teaching, Training, and Supervision
  • Receive regular clinical professional supervision from a senior clinical psychologist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.
  • Gain additional highly specialist experience and skills relevant to clinical psychology and/or the service, as agreed with the professional psychology manager.
  • Develop skills in the area of professional post-graduate teaching, training, and supervision and provide supervision to other MDT staff's psychological work, as appropriate.
  • Provide professional and clinical supervision of trainee and assistant clinical psychologists.
  • Contribute to the pre- and post-qualification teaching of clinical and/or counselling psychology, as appropriate.
  • Provide advice, consultation, and training to staff working with the client group across a range of agencies and settings, where appropriate.
Management, Recruitment, Policy, and Service Development
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation, and monitoring of the team's operational policies and services, through the deployment of professional skills in research, service valuation, and audit.
  • Advise both service and professional management on those aspects of the service where psychological and/or organisational matters need addressing.
  • Manage the workloads of assistant and trainee clinical psychologists, within the framework of the team's services policies and procedures.
  • Be involved, as appropriate, in the shortlisting and interviewing of assistant/graduate psychologists.
Research and Service Evaluation
  • Utilise theory, evidence-based literature, and research to support evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other team members.
  • Undertake appropriate research and provide research advice to other staff undertaking research.
  • Undertake project management, including complex audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within the service to help develop service provision.
IT Responsibilities
  • Maintain professional and personal records on computer, as appropriate.
  • Enter data onto local Trust IT systems and databases, as appropriate.
  • Utilise IT methodologies, such as email and the internet, to access clinical and professional information and communicate with colleagues.
General
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the highest professional standards of practice, through active participation in internal and external CPD training and development programmes, in consultation with the postholder's professional and service manager(s).
  • Contribute to the development and articulation of best practice in psychology across the service, by continuing to develop the skills of a reflexive and reflective scientist practitioner, taking part in regular professional supervision and appraisal, and maintaining an active engagement with current developments in the field of clinical psychology and related disciplines.
  • Maintain the highest standards of clinical record keeping, including electronic data entry and recording, report writing, and the responsible exercise of professional self-governance, in accordance with professional codes of practice of the British Psychological Society, The Health Professions Council, and Trust policies and procedures.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, national and local policies, and issues in relation to both the specific client group and mental health.
Safeguarding
  • All staff have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and adults at risk of abuse.
  • Staff should be aware of local safeguarding procedures and how to contact named professionals for advice and support, as well as reporting any concerns.
  • Staff are supported with the supervision and training needed to recognise and act on welfare concerns and respond to the needs of children and adults.
  • Staff have a responsibility to ensure they are up to date with any safeguarding training.
