Position Overview

Role: Section Engineer

Location: Heathrow Airport

Job Summary:

The Section Engineer plays a crucial role in overseeing the construction site operations to ensure that project goals align with client expectations while adhering to health and safety regulations, quality standards, environmental considerations, and budget constraints.

This position involves managing multiple ongoing projects, ensuring they meet the required quality standards, timelines, and financial performance.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Commercial Department, engineers, and surveyors to guarantee that all projects are executed safely, while consistently meeting or surpassing client expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Exemplify high standards of safety and environmental practices.
  • Oversee subcontractors, assistant engineers, and site personnel, ensuring they comprehend the Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS) prior to commencing work.
  • Verify the accuracy of setting out by shift engineers and ensure adherence to their responsibilities, including material testing and documentation.
  • Maintain proper survey book standards and daily logs by engineers while providing support to management.
  • Attend and occasionally lead coordination meetings with stakeholders and subcontractors.
  • Ensure that 3D drawings and specifications are comprehensive and accurate for construction, formally requesting any missing information promptly.
  • Complete and digitally record inspection and test plans as required by project management protocols.
  • Develop and monitor a 2-4 week work schedule with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Supervise work to promptly address unsafe conditions and ensure compliance with company policies.
  • Consider costs related to equipment, labor, materials, and scheduling.
  • Conduct material take-offs and requisitions as needed.
  • Prepare Method Statements, Inspection Test Plans, and review documentation prepared by others.
  • Order materials and maintain a record of all orders placed.
  • Complete Temporary Works Design Briefs and inspect temporary structures after receiving appropriate training.
  • Foster positive working relationships with clients, designers, and the supply chain.
  • Communicate effectively with foremen and laborers to ensure clarity of information.
  • Confirm any verbal instructions to subcontractors in writing on the same day and maintain comprehensive records of additional work resources.
  • Ensure all delivery tickets are appropriately coded for accounting purposes.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in a management engineering role within the construction sector, particularly in civil engineering and utilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of commercial and contractual principles.
  • Experience in a cost-sensitive environment.
  • Strong people management skills.
  • Experience managing subcontractors.
  • Proficient in stakeholder management, particularly with clients.
  • Ability to build relationships with external parties is essential.
  • Extensive knowledge of civil engineering technologies with significant prior experience.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities in construction contexts.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging at various organizational levels.
  • Advanced computer literacy.
  • Valid CSCS card.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in airport or critical infrastructure projects.
  • Background in international organizations.
  • Experience in managing key stakeholders beyond clients.
  • Membership in the Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent professional body.
