Role: Section Engineer

Location: Heathrow Airport

Job Summary:

The Section Engineer plays a pivotal role in overseeing the construction site to ensure that project delivery aligns with client objectives while upholding the highest standards of health and safety, quality, environmental considerations, and cost management.

This position entails managing multiple ongoing projects, ensuring they meet quality standards, adhere to timelines, and achieve optimal commercial outcomes.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Commercial Department, engineers, and surveyors to guarantee that projects are executed safely while consistently meeting or exceeding client expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and environmental practices.
  • Supervise subcontractors, assistant engineers, and site personnel, ensuring they comprehend the Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS) prior to commencing work.
  • Verify the accuracy of setting out by shift engineers and ensure adherence to their responsibilities, including material testing and documentation.
  • Maintain high standards for survey records and daily logs managed by engineers while providing support to their supervisors.
  • Attend and occasionally lead coordination meetings with stakeholders and subcontractors.
  • Ensure that 3D drawings and specifications are comprehensive and accurate for construction purposes, formally requesting any missing information promptly.
  • Complete and digitally document inspection and test plans as per project management protocols, ensuring accuracy and quality checks.
  • Develop and oversee a 2-4 week work schedule in collaboration with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Monitor site activities to promptly address unsafe conditions and ensure compliance with company policies.
  • Consider costs related to labor, materials, and project timelines in all decision-making.
  • Conduct material take-offs and requisitions as directed by the project manager.
  • Prepare Method Statements, Inspection Test Plans, and other necessary documentation, reviewing submissions from others.
  • Order materials and maintain a comprehensive register of all orders placed.
  • Complete Temporary Works Design Briefs and inspect temporary structures post-training.
  • Foster positive working relationships with clients, designers, and the supply chain.
  • Communicate effectively with foremen and team leaders to ensure clarity of information.
  • Confirm any verbal instructions to subcontractors in writing on the same day and maintain detailed records of additional work resources.
  • Ensure all delivery documentation is accurately coded for processing by the accounts department.
  • Undertake additional relevant duties as required.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in a management engineering role within the construction sector, particularly in civil engineering and utilities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of commercial and contractual frameworks.
  • Experience in a cost-sensitive environment.
  • Strong people management skills.
  • Experience in managing subcontractor relationships.
  • Proficient in stakeholder management, particularly with clients.
  • Ability to build relationships with external parties is essential.
  • Extensive knowledge of civil engineering technologies with significant practical experience.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities in construction contexts.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging at various organizational levels.
  • Advanced computer literacy.
  • Valid CSCS card.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in airport or critical infrastructure projects.
  • Background in international organizations.
  • Experience in managing key stakeholders beyond clients.
  • Membership in the Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent professional body.
