Position Overview

Role: Section Engineer

Location: Heathrow Airport

Responsibilities:

The Section Engineer will oversee the management of the construction site to ensure that project objectives are met while adhering to health and safety standards, quality assurance, environmental considerations, and budgetary constraints.

This role involves the delivery of multiple ongoing projects, ensuring they meet the specified quality, timeline, and commercial efficiency.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with the Commercial Department, engineers, and surveyors to guarantee that projects are executed safely while fulfilling or surpassing customer expectations.

Key Duties:

  • Exemplify high standards of safety and environmental practices.
  • Supervise subcontractors, assistant engineers, and site personnel, ensuring they comprehend the Risk Assessment and Method Statements (RAMS) prior to commencing work.
  • Verify the accuracy of setting out by shift engineers and ensure they fulfill their responsibilities, including material testing and documentation.
  • Maintain proper standards for survey books and daily logs by engineers, supporting their management.
  • Attend and occasionally lead coordination meetings with stakeholders and subcontractors.
  • Ensure that 3D drawings and specifications provide adequate and precise information for construction activities, formally requesting any missing details promptly.
  • Complete and digitally document inspection and test plans as per the Project Management Plan (PMP) and specifications, including checks for dimensional accuracy and quality.
  • Develop and oversee a 2-4 week work schedule with subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Monitor work conditions to promptly address any unsafe practices and ensure compliance with company policies.
  • Consider costs related to equipment, labor, materials, and project timelines.
  • Conduct material take-offs and requisitions as needed.
  • Prepare Method Statements, Inspection Test Plans, and review documents prepared by others.
  • Order materials and maintain a record of all orders placed and confirmed.
  • Complete Temporary Works Design Briefs and inspect temporary structures after receiving appropriate training.
  • Foster positive working relationships with clients, designers, and our supply chain.
  • Communicate effectively with foremen and team leaders to ensure clarity of information provided.
  • Confirm any verbal instructions to subcontractors in writing on the same day and maintain comprehensive records of resources used for additional works.
  • Ensure all delivery tickets are properly coded for accounting purposes.
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Proven experience in a management engineering role within the construction sector, particularly in civil engineering and/or utilities.
  • Demonstrated understanding of commercial and contractual principles.
  • Experience in a cost-sensitive environment.
  • Strong people management skills.
  • Experience in managing subcontractors effectively.
  • Proficient in stakeholder management, particularly with clients.
  • Ability to build relationships with external parties is essential.
  • Extensive knowledge of civil engineering technologies with significant prior experience.
  • Strong problem-solving capabilities in construction contexts.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage at various levels.
  • Advanced computer literacy.
  • Valid CSCS card.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in airport or critical infrastructure projects.
  • Background in working for international organizations.
  • Experience in managing key stakeholders beyond clients.
  • Membership in the Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent professional body.
