Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Occupational Therapist to join our team at Whittington Hospital NHS Trust. As a Rotational Occupational Therapist, you will have the opportunity to work in various clinical areas, including acute, intermediate care, and rehabilitation, mental health, pediatrics, and social services.

Main Responsibilities
  • Assess and treat patients with a range of physical, cognitive, affective, social, and environmental issues, utilizing a range of therapeutic skills and devising treatment plans.
  • Prioritize factors involved in patients' presenting conditions through clinical reasoning, based on skills, knowledge, experience, and current professional opinion.
  • Use a client-centered approach to set treatment goals that focus on patients' strengths and needs.
  • Ensure that patients and their carers have an understanding of treatment protocols and provide informed consent to examination and treatment.
  • Screen multidisciplinary referrals from various sources and devise and manage treatment plans for individual patients.
  • Contribute to the discharge planning process, ensuring that patients are discharged safely with relevant Occupational Therapy intervention.
  • Use knowledge of other multidisciplinary roles and external agencies to ensure effective referral management and achieve best patient care.
  • Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences, as required.
  • Ensure that client and service records are recorded and maintained, as per local Occupational Therapy, HCPC, BAOT, and Trust guidelines.
  • Prescribe, delegate, and monitor the work of Rehabilitation Assistants/Therapy Assistants and Technicians or Support Workers, and countersign documentation, as required.
  • Advise, demonstrate to, and teach relevant clients, carers, and health workers about ongoing rehabilitation and maintenance care programs and the use of equipment, as appropriate.
  • Manage clinical risk in your caseload and ensure that therapy/rehabilitation assistants and students comply with manual handling, risk assessment, and local policy regarding lone working.
Communication
  • Use well-developed verbal and non-verbal communication skills to ensure that patients and their carers understand relevant advice, education, and recommendations.
  • Communicate sensitive information in an understandable form to patients and their carers, enabling them to participate and cooperate in treatment.
  • Produce written, electronic, and verbal reports for the MDT, other health or social care providers, and convey this information to patients in an accessible and meaningful manner, using correct terminology, often in the face of communication barriers.
  • Comply with the Trust's policies on confidentiality, documentation, and record-keeping.
  • Give feedback in multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences, case reviews, etc., in relation to your clinical findings, in a consistent and professional manner.
Education/Professional
  • Utilize opportunities to develop skills and knowledge, apply critical appraisal, and keep up to date with current practice in the field.
  • Support other Occupational Therapists in the education and training of other professionals and visitors to the department.
  • Participate in education programs for client/service groups.
  • Support health promotion and health education initiatives within the locality and within the community directorate.
  • Comply with all mandatory training, proactively attending updates at the stated intervals.
  • Maintain and update a Continuing Professional Development portfolio.
  • Participate in the Preceptorship program, as required.
  • Participate in the Appraisal/Individual Performance Review system.
Management
  • Ensure that accurate and evaluative records of patient care are maintained, in line with the service policy.
  • Delegate appropriate work to staff in supporting roles and provide informal day-to-day support to Rehabilitation Assistants and students, enabling them to carry or assist with a managed caseload.
  • Be responsible for the safe use of all equipment.
  • Ensure that all equipment defects, accidents, and complaints are reported to the Team Leader immediately.
  • Comply with the Trust's/Social Services' policies and procedures, and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • Participate in the collection of statistics and audit programs, as required by the Service.
  • Participate in the induction/orientation of new staff members.
  • Attend and participate in Occupational Therapy/Joint Therapy staff meetings and other relevant meetings, as identified by the Team Lead.
  • Use time management skills, with supervision, to manage and organize your workload on a daily basis.
  • Maintain and develop specific departmental duties, as designated by the Lead/Senior OT of the service.
  • Participate in the development of services and initiatives in the Team, with the support and guidance from senior staff.
Research
  • Participate in the evaluation of clinical practice.
  • Keep up to date with the development of research and clinical practice in the field of rehabilitation, older people, and related areas.
